To borrow a line from Zora Neale Hurston, “There are years that ask questions and years that answer.” For Janeen Jones, a successful makeup artist based near Boston, Massachusetts, this year has been one that has answered questions regarding her aspirations for the future. Jones, who feels she has “learned everything through trial and error, success and failure,” has had an a successful career serving clients (from brides to fashion models), but says that what is “most special to me is knowing how proud my Mom and Dad are of me, and seeing it on their faces.”
Indeed, her upbringing has played a tremendous role in her professional development and there were moments when she was younger, and she would walk into the kitchen, staring as her aunt Marilyn apply makeup. Jones would sit mesmerized, watching as the cold cream touched her auntie’s face and how the foundation circled around the pink of her cheeks. The scents and smells that rose from each application lingered in the air, and filled a young Jones’ nostrils, infusing her with the desire to become a makeup artist.
Janeen Jones is a remarkable woman, makeup artist, and hairstylist. One can become acquainted with Jones in various capacities, but truly it is her unflagging wisdom and generosity, humility and warmth, that one remembers the most. Feeling a personal responsibility to young women, she aspires to serve as a beacon of inspiration to women wishing to be the best versions of themselves they can be, and she hopes to be able initiate a program for girls that addresses how to deal with, and overcome, all aspects of confidence, insecurity, body image, bullying, self-acceptance, self-love, and inner-outer beauty.
Jones’ aspirations also include having her own makeup line and signature brand of professional products. In the meantime, she highly recommends some of her favorite pieces, which include Bed Head Hard Head Hairspray and Lancome Virtuose Mascara (Black).
Jones’ makeup and hair work have appeared in a variety of publications including Improper Bostonian, Upscale Living, Papercut Magazine, Exhale Magazine, The Ultimate Magazine, RETRO Lovely Magazine, and Dyme Magazine. Her work has also been featured in video produced by FOX National News, Harvard Business School, the Charles River Media Group, and Fashion & Glamour with Yolanda (episode featuring designer Nara Paz).
