Different views of sexuality exist in popular culture. One of those views is that if you marry someone, then the sex of that person defines your sexuality. This is not always the case. In the GLBTQ culture, for instance, things are not always so black and white.
Hollywood rumors have spread regarding John Travolta’s sexual involvement with a man named former pilot Doug Gotterba. Questions related to this relationships, and a few other rumored ones, have raised questions about the possibility of his being either gay or bisexual – much like the rumors that first surfaced when Sex and the City actress Cynthia Nixon when she divorced and began dating Christina Marinoni.
People began to assume Nixon was a lesbian until she came out in early 2012 as a bisexual woman.
Now, the big issue is that people want him to come out one way or the other. For some reason, popular culture seems to feel more comfortable when someone puts a label on themselves.
Gotterba claims to have engaged in a sexual relationship with John for about six years before he married “Jerry McGuire” actress Kelly Preston.
In May, his name surfaced in connection with rumors that Travolta had made passes at two different men when he was getting a massage. The Hollywood gossip that circulated mentioned John reportedly enjoyed the sexual company of men in the past, allegedly before his marriage to actress Kelly Preston.
In the latest developments, it appears Doug commented further in an interview, casting even more light on questions related to Travolta’s sexuality:
‘We were making small talk when suddenly, I blurted out, “So, John, tell me. Now that you’re married, do you still prefer men – or women?” He looked me straight in the eye and said, “Well, Doug, I still prefer men!” I said, “okay.” And that’s the last time we saw each other.’
At the end of the day, the only person that needs to be concerned with John Travolta’s sexuality is how wife Kelly Preston. If she isn’t publicly concerned about it, then why are so many others making it their business?
Sexuality is something that exists on a continuum, defined differently by each person in a different ways. Members of the GLBTQ community identify themselves how they most feel comfortable. Perhaps he is not ready to share his sexuality with other. Or perhaps there is nothing really to share.

Either way, society has a few potential valuable lessons to learn here. Who you love does not define you, but is part of you. How you love is private and between you and those you love. There is no reason to make this another Hollywood scandal.
