“The Justice League aren’t the heroes you think they are.” “You can’t put your faith in them.” – David Graves
Our issue begins where issue eleven left off with the league being attacked by the spirits of their departed dead on Mount Sumeru, in the valley of souls. But just as all seems lost, a severely wounded Steve Trevor escapes from his prison and shoots Graves in the back to disrupt the villain’s powers.
“This isn’t my family!” – Superman
The team realizes the spirits they see are not their departed family members and go on the attack. Batman coordinates the attack by having Green Lantern, Cyborg and Superman hit Grave’s hard with everything they’ve got and Aquaman and Wonder Woman finish him off with power shots shattering his armor and his will.
“We’re going to ask for a new liaison.” – Wonder Woman
After Graves is placed in custody at Belle Reve, Diana visits a stable Steve Trevor in the hospital and tells him the league needs a new liaison because of their past relationship. Trevor takes it badly and asks her to leave.
“I call the shots Aquaman.” “We agreed to that a long time ago.” – Batman
Five of the league members: Green Lantern, Aquaman, Flash, Batman and Cyborg discuss the team’s future as Aquaman wishes to assume leadership and the Green Lantern, Hal Jordan decides to quit. Jordan feels he should be the scapegoat for all the issues at hand and teleports off the watchtower.
“We’re not like Zeus, but we’re not like them, either.” – Wonder Woman
We’re not like anyone.” – Superman
Superman and Wonder Woman meet atop the Lincoln memorial and discuss relationships for people like themselves, secret identities and loneliness. It is at this point the two embrace in a kiss and we switch to Belle Reve prison where Graves is now being held.
“I want you to write a book for me Mr. Graves.” “I was thinking it’d be titled , How to Destroy the Justice League, but you’re the writer.” “Finish the book for me, and I’ll take care of the rest.” – Amanda Waller
Amanda Waller shows up with a typewriter in hand in Graves cell and alerts him that his disease has slowed so he will live awhile longer and wishes for him to write a book about destroying the Justice League. Graves without muttering a word begins to type the title and names his story “The Villains Journey.”
Geoff Johns completes his villain’s journey story arc in clever fashion as David Graves survives (for now) in his battle with the league and is placed in Belle Reve prison under the supervision of Amanda Waller. Amanda Waller will now become a major thorn in the League’s side for the remainder of 2012 and beyond. Who is Amanda Waller you ask? Let me enlighten you. In the new 52, Amanda Waller appeared as an essential part in negotiating the rights to the prisoners held in Belle Reve. Those that she chose were put through her initiation process and whoever made it through to the end were assigned to Task Force X, which was informally called the Suicide Squad. She had her people kidnap 37 criminals on death row from Belle Reve prison, and then put them through severe training.
They were also implanted with micro-bombs in order to insure their obedience. On what they thought was their first mission, the seven surviving members of the Suicide Squad were captured and tortured for information regarding their team and their employer. Of the seven, only Savant broke. After determining that the remaining six wouldn’t talk, Amanda Waller revealed that the torture was all just another test, and that those six remaining would officially form the Suicide Squad. History lesson over. Graves is asked to write a story for Waller about how he would destroy the league and she states she will make it happen for him although his life is short for this world now. The artwork by Jim Lee is spot on once again as he always manages to capture the emotions of the characters involved especially the Steve Trevor, Wonder Woman argument in the hospital. The Wonder Woman, Superman kiss splash page is drawn beautifully as is the cover art, also done by Lee.
The League has its doubts about being a team and Hal Jordan decides to quit the League and asks Batman to make him the scapegoat as he figures most of his work keeps him off-world and he can keep a low profile in this way. This surprised me but leaves the door open for him to come back or even have a new Lantern join the team down the road. I guess you had to have some type of shake-up to coincide with the joining of Superman and Wonder Woman. With Hal leaving and Aquaman trying to become team leader it is starting to show that the team has a lot to work on and a possible rift is coming with the trinity war just months away.
Now let’s get to the part we all want to talk about: The super kiss. Wonder Woman and Superman meet after Diana’s argument with Trevor in Washington, D.C. atop the Lincoln memorial. They speak of how they both are not like the rest of the inhabitants of Earth. Comparing themselves to almost being gods. Superman reveals his identity to Diana but states he hates that he has to keep secrets, but it’s necessary to protect his friends and cannot get close to anyone because he fears for their safety. Diana asks if he feels lonely and they then embrace. The two have now found comfort in each other and can grow from that in a world where they feel they do not fit in.
Now that these two have been brought together it will be interesting to see how long it lasts. Diana is a free spirit and needs no man to take care of her. Superman has his own issues of finding his place in our world but always stands by his beliefs and will not let anyone, even Wonder Woman, sway him from changing those beliefs. The relationship should start with a beautiful chord for the rest of 2012, but when the trinity war starts in 2013 will both heroes band together or be on opposite sides of the fence which is sure to end the relationship.
The Booster Gold from the old 52 universe came to warn the new 52’s Booster Gold too little too late to stop the super couple from kissing in Justice League International annual one as both Boosters disappeared to only Geoff Johns knows where. What other disasters await the new universe from the Superman Wonder Woman relationship? Wait and see. Be sure to pick up Justice League International annual one for more on this story and Green Lantern annual one to find out the fate of Hal Jordan and the rise of the third army.
