San Diego’s Karl Strauss Brewing Company began in 1989 and is now the 44th largest American craft brewery. For the first time the brewery is distributing beyond Southern California. Their new bottling line and additional brewing capacity makes it possible to enjoy their beers in the upper half of the state (22 counties up north will see their beers). A series of “pint nights” is helping to introduce their beers to enthusiasts who haven’t ventured far enough south to ever take notice. Those outside California will still have to wait, but Karl Strauss will have their beers at several summer beer events, such as the Mammouth Craft Beer Fest in Mammouth Lakes August 3rd through August 5th. In Sacramento, you can find some of the bottled beers at Total Wine on Arden Way, and other select locations. More beers will be on the way (upon a recent visit only a few of their beers were out now), and these will expand the lineup beyond just their more recognizable beers like Red Trolley Ale (a gold medal winner at the Great American Beer Festival and World Beer Cup), and Tower 10 IPA. Their 60-barrel brewhouse produces more than 30 styles of beer, and their Barrel-aged series, Imperial Collection, and Coastal Reserve series, will be ones to look out for.
Next up: a review of six of their bottled beers.
