Denny Kisner’s “barber salon” concept is taking off. They now offer massage, facials, scrubs, and soon pedicures as well as his signature straight razor shave, cuts, and color. It was after the truck crashed into his Brooklyn Park location, shutting the business down for five months, that this shift took place. The transformation is still in its chrysalis stage. For now, while they wait for new windows & colorful decals, you can’t quite see into the windows in the new Glen Burnie location, but an “open” sign blinks brightly. Inside is a hub of motion and stylish imagination. Qusai Shahhab, originally from Iraq, is making jokes while he works expertly with a straight razor. Julie Ho is brightening up someone’s day while adding highlights, and the massage therapist is giving a massage to someone waiting. Music changes from day to day,as clientele of all ages, races, cultures, and personalities are welcomed. The owner and founder, Denny Kisner is talking excitedly about the upcoming changes, bantering with customers.
The chair for massages is a favorite talking point. The stylists encourage customers to try a free ten minute massage, or to check out the new rooms in the back where facials and massages are being offered by trained professionals. This shop treats its community of customers as friends, and leads the way showing the non-spa world how to reinvent massage as part of the daily preventative health care model. If you are coming for a haircut every two weeks, why not get a massage? Studies show the importance of touch to health, and the benefits of massage on lower blood pressure, and decreasing the prevalence of chronic pain and stress. “You’re crazy not to try a free massage!” says young entrepreneur Denny Kisner, 25, who is planning a grand opening to his new location after a truck crashed into his Brooklyn Park location last year.
He has incredible energy and friendliness behind his insistence, so people are taking his word for it, and getting their free massages. His business model is based on this straightforward customer satisfaction policy, and so clients loyally came to get their hair cuts in his parent’s garage while they took five months getting the new location up and running on Wellham avenue next to the million dollar Palm Beach Tan location.
The spa treatments that are available are for everyone including the tanning customers. Kisner’s has designed a signature pre-tanning salt glow with aromas that takes 20 minutes, and preps you for a better tan. Also, for exfoliation and general well-being,they offer a lavender peppermint brown sugar foot scrub & scented hot towel foot wrap, followed by a Shea butter, Dead Sea mineral reflexology massage that can be added to any massage on the spot for $10. Talk about a great impulse buy! And the prices for the massage services are beyond reasonable. Right now you can try a 60 minute Swedish massage for $45, a deep Tissue for $55, and a full body salt glow exfoliation & 30 minute massage for $70.
Massage Envy offers low prices like this to reach spa customers who can’t afford high rates, and now Kisner’s Barber Salon is offering low massage prices to the non-spa customer without a monthly fee so that the benefits of massage can be enjoyed by more and more people. As the weeks unfold and the new business location takes off; the shop itself is touched up, and the flowers outside the door bloom.
