Leon FC took control of the league table after thrashing Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente 4-0 at Nou Camp in Leon, Mexico. Current Mexican league champions Club Santos Laguna, as well as Tigres UANL are also in the top of the league table with two victories after two match days. Leon leads on goal differential.
On Friday, Miguel Sabah put Monarcas Morelia up 1-0 in the 25th minute of play to give la Monarquia the game against CF Monterrey. The panzas verdes of Leon destroyed Xolos at Camp Nou. Carlos Peña scored a double, Luis Montes also scored and Hernan Burbano converted from the penalty spot. Xolos lost midfielder Fernando Arce in the second half after receiving a red card.
Club America opened action on Saturday at the Azteca stadium against Jaguares de Chiapas FC. Colombian Luis Rey put the visiting squad ahead in the first half. A few minutes later Ecuadorian Cristian Benitez scored his first of two to even the score. Juan Medina put America ahead at the beginning of the second half for the 2-1.
Leonardo Bedolla closed the gap two minutes later. However, the eagles were able to take control of the field as Antonio Lopez put the ball in the net in the 80th minute. Benitez sealed the game 4-2 with his second goal in the final minute of regulation to give America their first win of the season.
The troubles continue for Hugo Sanchez and CF Pachuca as the Tuzos fell 3-0 to Atlas at Hidalgo stadium, Pachuca. Luis Sandoval opened the scoring with new acquisition Chilean Hector Mancilla adding a second. An error by Paraguayan Paulo DaSilva put the ball into his own net for the final 3-0. Pachuca has more to worry about since Jorge Hernandez and American Jose Torres received red cards and will miss next week’s game.
Argentine Lucas Lobos converted from the penalty spot and Hugo Ayala scored to give Tigres UANL the 2-1 victory over Atlante FC at the Universitario stadium, Monterrey. Esteban Paredes broke the net for the visiting squad.
Cruz Azul took three points from the Alfonso Lastras Ramirez stadium defeating Reales de San Luis FC 2-1 earning their first victory this season. Argentine Mariano Pavone and Javier “chuletita” Orozco scored for la maquina cementera. American Michael Orozco put San Luis on the board.
Sunday morning began with a pair of games plus an afternoon match to round off the week. Puebla FC hosted Toluca FC at the Cuauhtemoc stadium. Brazilians Lucas Silva da Oliveira and Wilson Tiago scored for Toluca who won 3-1. Colombian Edison Toloza put Puebla on the board, but that was not enough for La Franja.
At the same time Pumas UNAM destroyed Queretaro FC 3-0 at the Olimpico Universitario stadium, Mexico City. Argentine Martin Bravo put two in the net in the first 15 minutes of play. Eduardo Herrera added the third to give Pumas their first victory of the season. At this point in the season Queretaro, along with Puebla FC, is a candidate for relegation.
The final match of week 2 featured current Mexican league champion Club Santos Laguna visiting Chivas de Guadalajara. Colombian Darwin Quintero scored in the final minute of regulation to give Santos the victory at the Omnilife stadium, Guadalajara. Chivas were playing their first home game of the season; plus they were playing on their new grass field.
The Liga MX continues next Friday when Tijuana hosts Pumas UNAM at the Caliente stadium. After that game, Reales de San Luis FC visits Monarcas Morelia at Morelos stadium.
