As promised, for the next few weeks I’m going to be reviewing a variety of dating sites, apps and services aimed at helping you find love – or at least fine tune your dating skills! And today’s review is aimed specifically at the ladies. If you’ve ever felt like the “dating game” was getting just a tad bit boring, I have a review that’s going to interest you. Think “fantasy sports meets dating”. The website is called, Fantasy Dating Game and the goal is to compete with your friends to rack up the most points online while finding real love offline.
Full disclosure: I’m in an LTR, so it was a bit harder for me to snag dating points as my single counterparts, but the overall aim was still fun! And for the record, this dating game is not meant for people who are already coupled up!
So, Fantasy Dating Game is basically a virtual dating league where you and your friends can create a league, a prize for winning (usually not something terribly high stakes – remember this should be fun not stressful!) and compete to see who’s striving the most to find that perfect someone. Leagues usually last for about ten weeks and the maximum players in a league is ten. After joining the website, you can either opt to join a pre-existing league or start your own. If you want to join a pre-existing league just remember that you may be joining “mid-season” so you’ll have less weeks to accumulate points as your teammates.
Finding leagues is as easy as mousing over “Play” from the top bar and selecting “Search Leagues”. If you want to start your own league, once you reach the “Search Leagues” page, you select “Create a League” and follow the steps outlined. Remember you can only join one league at a time so choose wisely! Once you join, you can start logging points for interactions you have with dates. The options are:
- Number Exchanged
- Email/Text Received
- Call Received
- Went on a Date
- After-Date Contact
The points vary depending on the interaction you choose but obviously going on a date will gain you the most points! And to keep it fair for the singles, if you go on more than three dates with the same person, you can’t keep logging points for interactions with that person. At this point, it’s like forfeiting and you’re out of the game. But, if you found Mr. Right, this isn’t such a bad thing!
I actually think this is an awesome way to motivate even the most introverted woman to get out there and date. And, the fact that there’s a competitive edge to it makes it fantastic. The hope would be that seeing your friends or league mates gaining points would motivate you to get off your butt and get out in the field to find someone. Another thing that I definitely love about this website is the camaraderie that happens in the leagues. The ladies encourage each other to score more points. The aim isn’t just about winning the league prize.
Right now Fantasy Dating Game is currently only available through the web, but a mobile app is coming soon. However, the site is smart phone friendly so you can “play” while you’re out if you’d like!
The only iff-y thing or drawback that I see about Fantasy Dating Game is that it relies on the Honor Code. There’s no way to verify that the points someone’s posting are true. So, you would hope that your mates aren’t logging fake points just to win. And if you do that, quite frankly you’re only cheating yourself! The point of this game is to hone your dating skills so that you ultimately find Mr. Right. If you lie about it, then quite frankly, you must want Mr. Right to be a pint of Mr. Ben & Jerry’s ice cream!
I actually ended up joining a league that was based on the west coast, but I definitely urge and in fact encourage ladies out here in NYC who are constantly complaining about the state of the dating world to join this league. It’ll make dating a little more fun and a little less negative. We all know that the ratio of men to women in NYC is about 2:1, with men being the “1”. So by putting the fun back into dating with a website like Fantasy Dating Game, maybe you can remove the funk of desperation, have a good time and actually meet someone of substance!
