The morning of Monday, July 30, 2012 was a sad one for many as budding NFL player O.J. Murdock was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Friends and family still don’t know why he would have had a reason to kill himself, but word is out now that chilling and eerie text messages were sent to former coaches of his before his death.
TBO.com reports that there is indeed a suicide note from Murdock, but that the content of it will not be revealed yet due to the situation still being under investigation. That will give his loved ones at least some form of closure even though it still won’t be easy to accept.

Word going around now though is that Murdock sent text messages and made phone calls before his suicide. The Tampa Bay Times reports that Murdock’s receivers coach at Fort Hays State, Al McCray received a text from Murdock at 3:30 a.m.:
“It was like, ‘Coach, I appreciate everything you’ve done for me and my family.’ At the end of the text he said, ‘I apologize.’ I figured he’s apologizing because he texted me so early.”
TBO.com says that another former high school coach, Aesha Bailey got a call from Murdock just before his death. She was the first to find him in his car on Monday morning.
On the phone, “He just kept saying ‘I’m sorry, coach. I’m sorry,'” said Bailey, a former star athlete in the county before joining the teaching ranks. “That’s all he said.”
Sports writer Bill Ward covered Murdock while he was in high school. He got a text from Murdock as well and it came through at 6:03 a.m.
“Hey Mr Ward, it’s OJ Murdock…. I just want to thank u for everything you’ve done for me and my family. Can’t thank you enough.”
Ward replied to Murdock at 9:57 a.m.:
“Hi O.J. Thanks for those kind words. Are you recovered from the Achilles and back in camp with the (Titans)?”
Murdock did not respond.
The messages don’t tell a whole lot and neither does the phone call, but perhaps we aren’t meant to understand. Once the content of the suicide note is revealed, at least to Murdock’s family, maybe they will be able to understand this tragedy a bit more.
