In the first stages of a relationship, everything seems picture perfect. The way you interact with your partner is full of love and butterflies, understanding and compassion, and an immense amount of support.
However couples who have been together longer can sometimes easily forget how to be supportive to the one they love. This lack of support simply comes from the fact that we become comfortable and in tuned to our partners needs, so instead, we tend to voice our opinions more than our support.
Here are a few ways in which you can kick up the support meter in your relationship and show the person you fell in love with many years ago, just how much you have their back.
- One of the most valuable relationship keys is learning how to become a better listener. When you can really learn how to listen, you instantly become a more supportive partner. A few tips in how to increase your listening skills are: taking yourself out of the picture, not giving advice, asking your partner how they feel, and staying in the present moment. Even if what the one you love is saying something you may not necessarily agree with, give them your undivided attention, hear them out first, and give feedback when asked or needed (in a supportive way of course).
- Breathe. As simple as it may sound, learning how to breathe can be quite tricky and difficult for some people. When your partner comes home after a hard day of work and vents their frustration out on you, take a deep breath and think before you speak. Most of the time your partner just wants to get what is bothering them off their chest, and they choose you to vent to because they trust you the most. So the next time your partner is frazzled, take a deep breath and pause. Many times what they are stressed out about will fade and receiving support from you will decrease their stress dramatically.
- Let them know that you are there for them. Men and women both want to feel validated. Women usually express that more than men, but men still want to feel that they matter deep down inside. Some exceptional ways in which couples can show their support is to be there for their partner even if all their partner needs is space. A few tips to try include: complimenting each other for your efforts, letting go of the small stuff, not bringing up problems in public, and putting your pride aside to admit when you are wrong. These valuable tips and more, will significantly improve your relationship and will show your partner just how much you support them.
- Show your respect. All to often than not, couples tend to forget how to respect each other. Most of the time, showing respect can be as simple as letting them to do what they believe in or being genuinely interested in their beliefs. Other times showing your respect can be being the stronger partner when they are down and putting your own selfishness away. No matter how hard life can get, always make sure to show your respect, even if it is in the littlest of ways such as leaving them alone.
Every relationship can work harder at being more supportive. It is important to keep in mind that perfect relationships and perfect love do not exist. However, learning to be a supportive partner is a vital key in sustaining your love and building your relationship.
