For the Legend of Zelda fan who has everything, an eBay seller has listed what they say is a prototype version of the Nintendo Entertainment System classic.
A Buy-It-Now price of $150,000 accompanies the rare listing, which also includes a factory sealed version of the original release version of the game.
“This is a complete version to my knowledge and as far as I know does not differ from the released version,” the seller says in his listing. “The simple label reads ‘HP NOA 2-23-87 Legend of Zelda.’ The actual release of the game was August 22nd, 1987. I can only speculate that the 2-23-87 refers to the date they completed this prototype and being so close to launch is why there are no differences from the released version.”
To back up his claims the seller shows photographs of the inside of the cartridge, which does see the word TEST screened onto the printed circuit board inside. The case is not a standard grey NES cartridge case, either, nor the gold retail version. Instead it is a yellow NES cartridge case with a simple front label.
“I’ll sell my first born if needed,” joked Ohio gaming champion J.D. Lowe. “Seriously, that seems like a bit much, but for a piece of history I’d say it’s worth it.”
As of press time the item shows 14 offers have been made on the auction, which is slated to end on August 3.
