The existence of God
Does God exist? Is a infamous and timeless argument, at least for the past couple of millenniums, yet the argument will continue Wednesday evening 8/29 at 6 p.m. during the evening services of First Baptist West Monroe.
The two guests, who will debate the issue, representing the view of Christianity, and the view of Atheism; it is beginning to create interest in face of the potential of hurricane Isaac.
David Silverman, the President of the American Atheists, will put forth the argument against the existence of God. Silverman, graduate from Brandeis University with a bachelors in computer science and a marketing MBA from Penn State University. Silverman is a successful inventor with seventy four patents, and has authored several articles including a cover story for Inventors digest.
Silverman is married to publisher Hildy Silverman for nearly two decades, and they have one teenage daughter.
Mr. Silverman said he has been an Atheist since he was 6 years old, and has worked with the American Atheist organization since 1996. He was elected president of the organization in 2010. Silverman co-hosts the Atheist Viewpoint television program, writes for the NoGodBlog, attends protests, debates and conferences for atheism and freethought, across the country.
It was under Silverman that the American Atheists group sought to block the preservation of a cross-beam section of the World Trade Center skeleton that many survivors of the attack had regarded as a comforting religious symbol.
On the Christian side of the debate will be Dr. Alex McFarland director for Christian worldview and apologetics at North Greenville University in South Carolina, past president of Southern Evangelical Seminary. The author of numerous books with his most recent 10 Questions Every Christian Must Answer, and 10 Answers for Skeptics.
Alex McFarland does not apologize for his faith, he defends it, as an apologist, he speaks and writes, giving justification of his Christian beliefs. He has preached in all 50 states in 50 days through his ‘Tour of Truth Crusade” and preached in more than 1,350 individual churches of all denominations.
Dr. McFarland has contributed to books on youth, religion, and culture. Dr. McFarland has a new film, which highlights the need for America’s founding principles to the forefront, and the need for America to return to the founding fathers ideals as set forth in the Constitution.
This debate is a ‘must experience’ regardless of your individual measure of faith, or your commitment to a ‘no God’ point of view.
Toby Frost, the executive pastor of First West said, “This is the second in the ‘truth series’ where we really try to take subjects into the public square and look at those from a Christian perspective. We also want to educate our community on what the other side thinks as well”.
Pastor Frost said, “The debate will be divided into two segments. The first half will be on the subject, ‘Does God Exist?’ with the last half focusing on ‘Does the Christian God Exist?’”
Unless the debate is cancelled or postponed due to hurricane Isaac, which will be in the vicinity Wednesday and Wednesday evening; the debate will be at 6:pm, and it is advised to be at the church a bit early to ensure seating.
The place is: First Baptist church West Monroe, (First West). 311 Mill St. West Monroe, LA. The event will be in the worship center and the cost is an outstanding “free”. This is a wonderful event even for those who have never attended a debate, as both men are quite colorful and entertaining world class experts in their respective points of view, and make it very understandable.
