The biased coverage of the Republican convention by the so-called “mainstream media” has sparked sharp criticism from conservatives. On Tuesday, Tea Party Nation’s Judson Phillips compared American media outlets to Soviet-era Pravda, while actor Jon Voight invoked Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez on Wednesday.
“During the days of liberals’ favorite nation, the old Soviet Union, the official newspaper was Pravda, which in Russian means truth. Everyone, including Russians back in the day knew that all Pravda did was shill for the Communist Party,” Phillips wrote.
“Now in America, we have our Pravda media. They are shilling for the successor to the Communist Party,” he added.
Phillips goes on to discuss how the media is focusing on Hurricane Isaac, with some suggesting that the GOP call off its convention in light of the storm. Obama, in the meantime, is holding campaign rallies in three states.
“Is the media suggesting that perhaps he should be cancelling those?” he asked.
“No,” he wrote.
Actor Jon Voight had similar criticism when he spoke to Steve Malzberg on Wednesday, Newsbusters reported.
“The media has been overtaken by the Obama administration in no less a way than Hugo Chavez took over media in Venezuela,” he said.
“I never dreamed I’d see the day when the main media would refuse to cover the Republican convention, and would edit the Republican convention just as you suggested,” he added.
“Anybody in my business knows that editing is everything,” Voight told Malzberg. “You can make anything look good or bad or whatever. You can create all sorts of, you know, emotional impressions with editing.”
“So this is propaganda pure and simple,” he explained. “There is no Democratic Party anymore. It’s a propaganda party, I’ve been saying that. And that’s what we’re dealing with. So it is a fight against lies and distortion.”
An article at the American Spectator by Robert Stacy McCain says that journalists went to the Republican convention with one primary goal, and that is to “write dishonest stories aimed at preventing the GOP from winning this year’s election.”
On Tuesday, American Values president Gary Bauer told Newsbusters that the media is not even trying to hide its anti-GOP bias.
“I have never seen a media so deeply in the tank for the left and for the Democratic Party and for Barack Obama. Never,” he said.
“They don’t even try to look like they’re unbiased anymore…They look like they’re a division of the Democratic National Committee,” he added.
McCain notes that Republicans are “sadly familiar” with this kind of bias.
“And they’ll be happy to learn that the Media Filing Center here at the convention in Tampa is open 24 hours a day, providing liberal journalists the facilities to lie around the clock,” he added.
