The average premium for Medicare drug coverage is expected to stay the same for 2013. A big reason for this is the introduction of new generic drugs, providing alternatives to higher-cost drugs such as Lipitor and Plavix.
Lipitor (atorvastatin) belongs to a group of drugs called HMG CoA reductase inhibitors, or “statins.” Lipitor reduces levels of “bad” cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein, or LDL) and triglycerides in the blood, while increasing levels of “good” cholesterol (high-density lipoprotein, or HDL) – drugs.com.
Plavix (clopidogrel) keeps the platelets in your blood from coagulating (clotting) to prevent unwanted blood clots that can occur with certain heart or blood vessel conditions. Plavix is used to prevent blood clots after a recent heart attack or stroke, and in people with certain disorders of the heart or blood vessels. Plavix may also be used for other purposes not listed in this medication guide. – drugs.com
