Raising three daughters in a Christian home in Springfield, Missouri one of the scariest possible problems was letting one of those girls date when they were only thirteen. Because of this possibility the joke was always that they could not date until they were thirty. Not much of a joke you say. Neither was the crime spree of the eighteen year old Kentucky man and his thirteen year old girl friend.
According to the boy’s mother the girl was thought to be nineteen. I guess it was a shock to her that this thirteen year old would want others to think her much older. That is what teenagers do. They want to be older than they are. That is why Kayla, a mother with three children will get to start dating this year. She will turn thirty in November.
Heather and Michelle have already started dating. They are both married with children of their own. That means altogether they have given their parents nine grandchildren. The oldest, Heather, turns thirty six this year. None of the three would have been able to convince an eighteen year old that they were not thirteen. They did not date at thirteen.
When Cindy, the girl’s mother, started dating a nineteen year old, she was only fifteen. She was a sophomore in high school and he a junior in college. After their first daughter was born this was always a worry. What if they wanted to date a guy four years older? While it is hypocrisy to say it, that would never have happened. Not until they left home for college. Then Dad could not require the young man to pick them up at the house after he met him.
Parents, your children are your responsibility. It is your fault if your child is caught in another state after having stolen vehicles and passed bad checks. If they are eighteen the law says it is their responsibility. Not so with a thirteen year old. The parents can be held accountable. Watch your children.
A number of years ago the young daughter of a friend became pregnant at fifteen. She had been allowed to hang out with an older brother and his friends for years. The parents thought the older sibling would keep the younger child safe. He did not. The error was the parents’ not the older brother. Child abuse and neglect are rampant in the United States. Parents wake up and take responsibility for letting your children grow up before they have to.
