Chris used to be a top smuggler but gave up his illegal ways when he got married. Now with his brother-in-law having crossed a drug lord Chris finds himself back in the middle of things, wanted by the cops, drug lords, and killers.
Mark Wahlberg (Chris), Ben Foster (Sebastian), Lukas Haas (Danny), Kate Beckinsale (Kate), Robert Wahlberg (John), Giovanni Ribisi (Briggs), Caleb Jones (Andy), Kent Bernard (Tommy), David O’Hara (Church).
Contraband is a somewhat dark film, both in plot and production, that strongly incorporates emotion throughout the film. The plot is somewhat predictable and one we have seen before many times but the inclusion of emotion and darkness of the film is surprising. Rather than being all about action, or molding Wahlberg into a superhero, the film presents the tough choices being made alongside the interesting methods of smuggling. As the movie progresses tension and action increase to a nice pace that lasts through the end.
Acting was pretty good with Wahlberg giving a very authentic feeling performance. Foster was entertaining and his character development was nicely done. Ribisi was an interesting choice as antagonist and the role felt a bit beyond him. Beckinsale, Haas, and the remainder of the supporting cast did nicely throughout.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were well done but quite dark giving the film a serious, almost depressing feel. Action and effects were nicely done without dominating the show. Dialogue, sound, and soundtrack were all fairly well done.
Overall Contraband is a nicely done crime thriller despite the dark feel. Plot, acting, and pace are well done and the film has a solid feel. Genre fans will likely enjoy this one, as will Wahlberg fans. Those wanting pure action may be a bit disappointed.
With violence, plenty of foul language, and some drug use this should be fine for older teens and above.
Contraband is no longer showing in any Littleton Colorado movie theatres.
