Inheriting her father’s pirate ship, beautiful Morgan and her crew set out to avenge his death and find the treasure of Cutthroat Island. As Morgan swashbuckles with the best of them she and her crew find other ruthless pirates, adventure, betrayal, and maybe even some of the treasure they were promised.
Geena Davis (Morgan), Matthew Modine (Shaw), Frank Langella (Dawg), Maury Chaykin (Reed), Patrick Malahide (Ainslee), Stan Shaw (Glasspoole), Rex Linn (Blair), Paul Dillon (Snelgrave), Jimmie Skaggs (Scully).
Cutthroat Island starts off a bit slow but eventually develops a mediocre pace with obvious effort at becoming more. Character development is part of the story, and a lot of what keeps the otherwise somewhat bland plot interesting. Along with the monkey that is. The film moves along well but just doesn’t develop any serious energy, lending itself instead to the somewhat silly genre of pirate movies to come out lately.
Acting was interesting if not good. In 1995 Davis was doing quite well but roles like the one she had here probably didn’t help her career much. Though she tried, she just didn’t quite feel the part. Playing opposite, Modine was impossible to take serious as usual. Langella was mildly more entertaining but didn’t have enough of a role to save things, nor did the remainder of the supporting cast.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were actually pretty good and the film obviously had something of a budget. Physical effects were mild but okay. Dialogue was campy, pointless, and often felt forced. Sound and soundtrack were decent.
Overall Cutthroat Island is an entry level pirate flick that really brings nothing new to the genre. Diehard pirate film fans may enjoy this while others will likely find it campy and lacking any sort of depth.
With some action violence and brief sensuality, this should actually be fine for preens and above.
Cutthroat Island is no longer showing in any Littleton Colorado movie theatres.
