Taking a short vacation from schoolwork, three American students stumble upon a Slovakian hostel without realizing it is actually a hunting ground for wealthy psychopaths wanting to explore their gruesome fantasies. Prices for providing people can vary, but if you want to torture and murder an American girl you will pay a steep price.
Lauren German (Beth), Roger Bart (Stuart), Heather Matarazzo (Lorna), Bijou Phillips (Whitney), Richard Burgi (Todd), Vera Jordanova (Axelle), Jay Hernandez (Paxton), Jordan Ladd (Stephanie), Milan Knazko (Sasha).
Hostel: Part II immediately looks a lot like the first film, which it then feels the need to remind us about with flashbacks. Once we get past the memory refresher things get a bit more interesting but this one still looks like a template copy of the original. There just isn’t much new other than a few faces and some different types of gore. Unlike the original though, this one lacks the nudity, sexual energy, and excessive violence of the first film. It almost felt as if Tarantino was afraid to go over the top, as with the first film, and do a good job of shocking the audience.
Acting takes some of the blame here with the three main characters being fairly boring and vanilla. A bit more focus on the psychopaths and what drives them helped, and acting from that perspective was fairly well done. Having Hernandez rejoin was nice, as was Zigo and the hotel clerk.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds are consistent with the first film and fairly well done, though more explicit action and gore would have been nice. Effects were well done with good violence, gore, and a decent cringe factor at times. Dialogue was mediocre at best and didn’t really add much. Sound and soundtrack were okay.
Overall those who felt the original went too far may enjoy this one a bit more. At the same time, those who enjoyed the original may feel like this is the diet version and walk away unsatisfied.
With plenty of violence, gore, foul language, and some sexuality save this for the oldest teens and above.
Hostel: Part II is no longer showing in any Littleton Colorado movie theatres.
