What is more fun than finding yourself alive after the apocalypse? Finding there are vampires, zombies, religious fanatics, and very little food or water. Finding himself in just such a position, Mister ends up with a young apprentice whom he teaches how to survive as the two head to New Eden, the vampire free zone, picking up other strays along the way.
Connor Paolo (Martin), Nick Damici (Mister), Gregory Jones (Dad), Traci Hovel (Mom), Kelly McGillis (Sister), Danielle Harris (Belle), Elilis Cahill (Scamp), James Godwin (Barn Vamp), Tim Hourse (Sheriff), Marianne Hagan (Foley).
Stake Land starts off well enough with some teaser action before stepping back to provide history and background information. From there the film is a blend of mixed results, looking like some other recent zombie films without the humor. The vampire zombies were a nice attempt at genre-bending but lacked focus in the film which instead paid more attention to Martin’s education and thoughts. A bit more action, and gore, would have planted this one solidly in the horror category and added quite a bit to the impact of the film.
Acting was mediocre from Paolo who felt a bit out of place and unpracticed at times. Damici put forth the effort but just couldn’t sell himself as a super-tough vampire zombie killer, either physically or emotionally. The remainder of the supporting cast was mediocre and felt like there could have been more energy put forth.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were decent with a nice apocalyptic feel if somewhat simplified at times. Dialogue was solid but for the most part dark, dreary, and downright depressing. Sound and soundtrack were okay.
Overall Stake Land is a mid-level entry in the vampire zombie genre, and maybe a bit higher on the post-apocalyptic scale. Those who enjoy a good end of the world flick will enjoy this quite a bit, with vampire and zombie fans next in line. Others wanting lavish production or a deep plot will be somewhat disappointed.
With lots of graphic violence, gore, horror scenes, and nudity save this for the oldest teens and above.
Stake Land is no longer showing in any Littleton Colorado movie theatres.
