Mid-August, horse lovers may choose from dozens of exciting equestrian events across the American Midwest.
The Midwest Horse Fair presents Taking the Reins, an equestrian exposition at Madison’s Alliant Energy Center, during the third weekend of August. Training sessions and performances focus on a variety of equestrian disciplines: dressage, driving, jousting, liberty, reining, trail, Western dressage, and more. In addition, plentiful vendors will offer equestrian equipment and horse-themed wares.
Taking the Reins runs from Friday, August 17, through Saturday, August 18.
August’s third weekend also offers a stampede of equine breed shows, horse training clinics, open and pleasure shows, barrel races, and county fairs.

Circle E Equestrian Stables’ Summer Series 2012 concludes with an open horse show in Seymour, Wisconsin, on Saturday, August 18.
The Wisconsin/Illinois Buckskin, Dun, and Grulla Promoters offer an ABRA-approved open show at Showtime Arena of Deerfield on Saturday, August 18, and Sunday, August 19.
The Otter Creek Dressage Fest steps along on Saturday, August 18, and Sunday, August 19, in Wheeler, Wisconsin.
In Belleville, Wisconsin, the Hoofer Riding Club rounds out its 2012 Dressage Summer Schooling Series with a show on Sunday, August 19.
In Sycamore, Illinois, the Circle K-D Trail Riders present a fun show on Saturday, August 18.
On the same date, the Relaxed Riders Saddle Club puts on a fun show at the St. Croix Riders Arena in Baldwin, Wisconsin.
In Black River Falls, Wisconsin, the Wazee Riders wind up their 2012 Summer Gymkhana Series at the Jackson County Fairgrounds on Thursday, August 16.
The Hoofer Riding Club finishes its 2012 Hunter/Jumper Schooling Series with an event in Belleville, Wisconsin, on Saturday, August 18.
Natural Horsemanship shows
The Rick Kemp Memorial Tournament Day goes off on Saturday, August 18, hosted by Kemp Horsemanship, LLC, at Rainbow Acres Ranch in Jackson, Wisconsin.
On Saturday, August 18, the Clark County Pleasure Riders host their Double-Judged “Come as You Are” Family Show in Greenwood, Wisconsin.
Also on August 18 in Wisconsin, the Marshfield Saddle Club invites equestrians to a “Come as You Are” open show.
The Broken Cinch Saddle Club holds its Futurity and Two-Day Open Show at Wisconsin’s Fond du Lac County Fairgrounds on Saturday, August 18, and Sunday, August 19.
On Sunday, August 19, the 47th Annual Red Cedar Riders WSCA Horse Show steps off in Chetek, Wisconsin.
Willow Creek Ranch, Inc, a therapeutic riding center, presents an open pleasure horse show and fundraiser on Sunday, August 19, at West 20 Ranch and Saddle Club in East Troy, Wisconsin.
The Fox Valley Saddle Association’s 2012 Horse Show Series continues on Sunday, August 19, with an open show in Hampshire, Illinois.
Practice Fun Day shows
Western Connection Ranch, LLC, offers a Practice Fun Day on Sunday, August 19, in Rhinelander, Wisconsin.
Wild West Days go on in Viroqua, Wisconsin (see map), presenting professional and Little Britches rodeo action from Friday, August 17, through Sunday, August 19.
Be sure to call ahead and confirm equestrian events before leaving your home barn.
Equestrians are urged to check the appropriate websites, email, or call to confirm event details before departing home barns with horses. Last-minute schedule changes frequently occur for horse shows, riding clinics and other horsey happenings. Certain equestrian facilities may offer rain dates, in case of cancellation for inclement weather.
Current negative Coggins test results are required for all equine participants at these events. Veterinary papers may be needed for horses crossing state lines.
On-site horse stalls may be available at many events by advance reservation.
