Just like people, many of our pets would be on the way to a healthier lifestyle if their pet parents take a few moments to rethink some of the products they use. To help us focus a bit more on a healthier way of life for our pets, August 30 has been designated National Holistic Pet Day.
Brad Kriser, CEO and founder of Kriser’s, a multi-unit pet retailer specializing in all-natural pet food and supplies, shares a few tips to give your pets the care their bodies deserve.
Consider switching to all-natural pet food. It’s just as important to read the label on your pet’s food as it is on your own food. Look for all-natural pet food that is free of unnecessary additives, chemicals, by-products and preservatives. If you don’t know what a particular ingredient is on a label, your pet probably shouldn’t be eating it. Going all-natural makes it easier for your pet to digest, leading to a stronger immune system and possibly more longevity. Your pet should also eat 20 percent less with fillers out of his or her diet.
Put your pet on a vitamin and supplement routine. Vitamins and supplements can help your pet’s health in a variety of ways by improving an animal’s skin, coat, joints, immune system and digestive system.
Use all-natural shampoo and grooming products. Harsh shampoos and grooming products may be irritating to your pet, causing an unpleasant experience that may make them more resistant to grooming. Look for all-natural, gentle products to take the sting and irritation out of grooming and to make your pet more at ease with the process. It also should help your pet have a healthier coat.
Stimulate your pet’s mind. Finding ways to keep your pet’s senses keen is one of the best ways to enrich an animal’s life. Tap into their natural instincts by stimulating their mind with scent games, agility courses, creative commands or interactive toys. This should improve the bond between you and your pet.
Socialize your pet. Socialization is just as important as stimulating your pet. Look for safe options that will help them build their social skills. Look at dog parks, doggy meet-up groups and other options to help your dog build relationships with other dogs and people. Kitty gyms and condos and added playtime help with socializing your cat.
Holistic pet care continues to be a growing segment of the pet care industry. According to market research firm Mintel, the natural and organic pet food category is estimated to grow to an $18.1 billion industry by 2016.
