According to ”Leading From Behind: The Reluctant President and the Advisors Who Decide for Him,” President Obama canceled the raid to kill Osama bin Laden three times at the urging of Valerie Jarrett, the Daily Caller reported Sunday.
Richard Miniter, the author of the new book, said that Obama canceled the raid in “January 2011, again in February, and a third time in March,” David Martosko wrote.
When Obama finally gave the order in early May, he waited 16 hours to do so, the Daily Mail reported.
Nevertheless, the entire “Democrat-media complex” acted as though Obama made the most historic decision in history. Even Vice President Joe Biden called it the “most audacious” plan conceived in the last 500 years.
The Daily Caller added that Miniter cited “an unnamed source with Joint Special Operations Command who had direct knowledge of the operation and its planning.”
Obama administration officials also said after the raid that the president had delayed giving the order to kill the arch-terrorist the day before the operation was carried out, in what turned out to be his fourth moment of indecision. At the time, the White House blamed the delay on unfavorable weather conditions near bin Laden’s compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan.
But Miniter said weather reports from the U.S. Air Force Combat Meteorological Center showed ideal conditions on the day in question.
“President Obama’s greatest success was actually his greatest failure,” he told the Daily Caller.
The revelation would seem to lend credibility to a report in May that said Obama knew the whereabouts of the terror mastermind as early as summer 2010, but took no action.
Nevertheless, the Obama campaign team has used the raid to bolster support in the upcoming election – going so far as to issue an ad asking if a President Romney would have made the decision.
“[Obama] took the harder, and the more honorable path,” former president Bill Clinton said in the ad. “He had to decide. And that’s what you hire the president to do. You hire the president to make the calls when no one else can do it.”
“The commander-in-chief gets one chance to make the right decision,” the ad said before asking: “What path would Mitt Romney have taken?”
Clinton himself missed several opportunities to get bin Laden.
In 2003, Miniter wrote in “Losing bin Laden” that Clinton “allowed the September 11 attacks to happen by squandering more than a dozen opportunities to capture or kill bin Laden. In two cases the terrorist leader’s exact location was known,” the Telegraph reported.
The current book “traces the arc of six key Obama administration decisions, and shows how the president made them — and, often, failed to make them,” the Daily Caller said.
