The 2012 NFL pre-season schedule gets underway in less than two weeks, so it’s time to start looking ahead to football! The NFC East was once the toughest division in football that used to see two or even three teams make the post-season, but that hasn’t been the case the last few years.
In the last two seasons, the only team to make the playoffs from the NFC East were the division winners.
This once wide open division between four great teams has been dominated by the New York Giants and the Philadelphia Eagles for the last decade.
Since the 2000 season, the G-Men and Eagles are the only two teams to win the NFC East division crown, (except the Cowboys in 2009) meaning it’s been a rough decade for the Redskins and Cowboys.
Will the Giants prove they were no fluke last season and repeat as Super Bowl champions, or will the Eagles, Cowboys or Redskins rise up and take over?
Here is my quick breakdown and prediction for the NFC East:
Philadelphia Eagles (Over/Under Wins 10.5)
The Eagles may be one of the most talented teams on paper, but can they get it together on the field? The Eagles finished 8-8 last season, which isn’t that bad considering they lost eight of their first twelve games.
Can the Eagles pick up where they left off at the end of 2011 when they finished on a four game winning streak?
Dallas Cowboys (Over/Under Wins 8.5)
It’s Tony Romo’s world, and the rest of the Cowboy’s just live in it! Seriously though, this team will only go as far as Romo takes them. Last season Dallas blew three double-digit leads, leading to three losses that they would never recover from.
2012 had better lead to bigger and better things in Big D, or many changes will follow.
Offensively, Dallas is one of the best in the NFL if they can avoid injuries. QB Tony Romo, Miles Austin, Jason Witten and DeMarco Murray are some of the best at their positions, but the key is can they all stay healthy?
If so, they could be the team to beat in the NFC East in 2012.
New York Giants (Over/Under Wins 9)
The defending Super Bowl champions are coming into 2012 with many questions, and one of them is ‘was last year a fluke?’ No way! Eli Manning is one of the best QB’s in the game today, yet people still look at him pretty far down the totem pole.
The Giants have won the Super Bowl twice in the last five seasons, that speaks volumes in itself.
The big questions for big blue are how will they deal without RB Brandon Jacobs and WR Mario Manningham, and will Victor Cruz be able to pull off back to back great seasons.
Washington Redskins (Over/Under Wins 6.5)
The Redskins are one major question mark. They went 5-11 last season, yet they beat the Super Bowl champion NY Giants both times they faced them! The addition of Robert Griffin will draw fans, but will it produce wins?
It’s hard to believe, but last season the Redskins started off 3-1, including an opening day romp over the Giants.
Washington was once the beast of the NFC East, but they have finished in last place four years in a row and this season may be more of the same.
2012 NFC East odds:
- Philadelphia Eagles +130
- New York Giants +195
- Dallas Cowboys +250
- Washington Redskins +875
NFC East Prediction:
- 1. Dallas Cowboys
- 2. Philadelphia Eagles
- 3. NY Giants
- 4. Washington Redskins
