Hammond, Indiana police say a man posing as a gasoline delivery driver stole more than 2,100 gallons of gas from a station’s storage tanks on Saturday.
Due the recent BP recall of contaminated gas, the store manager said it was not unusual for gas to be pumped from the tanks and replaced. So when the suspect said he needed to check the tanks’ fuel level, the store clerk didn’t give it second thought.
Hammond police are searching for the driver of the tanker who made off with approximately $8,500 worth of gas.
Police say two other convenience stores in Hammond have reported incidents of pump tampering that has resulted in 350 gallons of gas being stolen by several vehicles.
