For the most part, Medicare covers the medical expenses for folks over the age of 65. However, it does not cover all costs, not even under Obamacare. Since people over the age of 65 are more likely to suffer from health problems, it means that they better have saved up during those years they were working to cover these contingencies.
Drugs like Avastin are costly. It was once approved for use in the case of breast cancer but this approval was revoked in December 2011. Although this drug was shown to slow down the progress of metastic breast cancer, the benefits were not significant enough to warrant paying the high cost. The annual cost is approximately $100,000.
Marinol is another drug that seems more costly than its natural component. The cost appears to be approximately $1,250 per month. It is synthesized marijuana which means they take the marijuana leaf and spray chemicals on it. The effect is much stronger than that of natural cannabis and seems to lead to psychosis in a percentage of patients. For some, the result is death. The drug is used for the same conditions that medical marijuana was expected to be used for. The cost of this drug appears to be covered by Medicare even though it uses marijuana.
Since the use of marijuana is still a violation of federal law, the cheaper alternative treatment is not covered by Medicare. Should it be? It should probably be considered. Since the cost is considerably less than the alternative, marinol, it might save enough Medicare dollars to cover other health care costs without increasing the national debt. Based on the Obamacare requirement that The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services develop the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation to test for innovative payment and delivery models it is likely that changes in approved drugs will take place without much fanfare. For seniors, the bottom line should be the effectiveness of the product.
