The honor of an Olympic medal has to be one that doesn’t just rub off the second the athlete leaves the podium. Of course there is the chance to show the medal off to family and friends. Plus just wearing it around the neck is cool too. So why take it off when showering? Felipe Kitadai, a Brazilian judoka accidentally broke his Olympic bronze medal when he was in the shower on Sunday and he wants a new one.
While it almost sounds like a joke, it appears the Olympic athlete wasn’t thinking properly when he decided to hit the shower with the medal. The beautiful prize dropped and ended up breaking. The medal itself has a small dent from hitting the floor and the strap is completely used. Now the Brazilian officials are asking the Olympic Committee to reissue a medal for the athlete to replace it.
This is the first incident of a medal being broken at the 2012 Olympics, but not the first time athletes have hit the showers with their medals. Holding on to it everywhere they go, the Olympians have a hard time taking off the medal after they won.
