The Nielsen company said Saturday that London’s Olympic games opener was the most-watched opening ceremony of any summer or winter Olympics, according to the Huffington Post. The ceremony was praised for its beauty and brilliance and was most noted for the made-for-TV stunt by James Bond, portrayed by Daniel Craig, who walked Queen Elizabeth II to the ceremony.
With high ratings, praise from viewers and major news outlets, and a number of big names making an appearance, it seems as though everything about the opening ceremony was perfect and nothing was missing. Nothing, except maybe British boy band, One Direction.
Many Directioner’s were dismayed to find that one of the biggest bands in the UK did not take part in the festivities, as there were rumors circulating they were making a surprise performance. But 1D fans can rest easy. The Mirror has confirmed One Direction will perform at the closing ceremony of the Olympic games in two weeks.
One Direction consists of members Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson. The boys were discovered by Simon Cowell on “The X-Factor.” The band rose to fame with their debut album and hit single, “What Makes You Beautiful.” They are currently in the studio recording their sophomore album.
One Direction is expected to be joined by fellow Brit Ed Sheeran, who wrote a track on their debut album and is said to be writing a number of songs for their next. Other acts reported to be performing are The Who, Take That, Queen, and the Spice Girls.
As Huffington Post UK says, “One Direction is one of England’s biggest musical exports right now, so it seems only fitting the boys take the stage during the closing event in their home country.”
An anonymous source said:
“The main theme of the Olympic closing ceremony will be celebrating the best of British music, so it’s only right that One Direction are opening the show. They are the UK’s biggest music export at the moment behind Adele, who is also rumoured to be involved in some way. It’s all top secret and the boys aren’t allowed to talk about it but they are thrilled. It isn’t every day you get the instant exposure of performing in front of a billion people. One Direction are unstoppable at the moment. They have achieved many career highlights at such an early age but this is right up there. To perform in their home country’s Olympic ceremony is like winning their very own gold medal.”
A rep for One Direction has yet to confirm the boys will, in fact, be performing in two weeks. But, let’s hope they are. All of the aforementioned performers on one stage sounds like musical gold to me.
