When most think of Philly, its pretzels, ben franklin, cheesesteaks, music, celebrities and violence, yet underneath this mirage is a phenomenon called Philly fashion. When I started working in the industry as model in 2009 it did not take long to get to the top of the social scene. Along the way I met top fashion executives from around the world who come to Philly to breath the inspiration of the runway.
Philadelphia’s ongoing rivalry with New York City has brought forth innovative ways to bring couture fashion into every community through charity driven events. The top charity driven event in Philly is called 17 Days of Fashion founded by celebrity fashion stylist Anthony Henderson. 17 Days of Fashion attracts about 2,000 locals to over 20 events in a 17-day period from August 17 through September 2. Community, Charity, Couture, it definitely delivers.
If its professional networking you seek The Fashion Marketing and Development co. produces an event known as the InCrowd. CEO and CCO Sherwin Raven markets about 10 events a year attracting about 5,000 international fashion executives while pumping about 35,000 into the local economy. This is definitely the place to start or further your career in the fashion industry.
Although we’ve had our controversy one business that deserves honorable mention is FBH The Agency who produces Philly Fashion Week. Founded in 2007, Philly Fashion Week is a 4-day event, which happens 2 times a year. The event showcases ready to wear, couture, and accessory designers. As a buyer for international boutiques I’ve found many great products during events also having the opportunity to hit the catwalk for New York based designer D’Marsh and red carpet with Karina Bradley.
With live hair and make up demonstrations, free spa treatments and custom made clothing on everyone. Philadelphia is telling the world we live a high quality haute couture lifestyle and were still growing. Kudos to Mayor Michael Nutter who has been a grand support of building the apparel retail industry for local entrepreneurs, recently breaking ground to host Vogue Fashion Night Out in Philadelphia.
