The “Pretty Little Liars” summer season finale “The Lady Killer,” which aired on August 28, was all about a big betrayal. That betrayal wasn’t just referring to who Maya’s killer is — which wasn’t completely surprising — but more about who else is on the A team.
Forget Paige (Lindsey Shaw). Sure she’s been the focus for weeks as the girls gathered clues against her and as their suspicions grew that she was A. But “PLL” isn’t the kind of show to just casually give that away without some crazy drama.
But that drama came on “The Lady Killer.” With Garrett’s trial underway, Emily (Shay Mitchell) is whisked away by Nate (Sterling Sulieman), who she suddenly trusts is just her “friend,” despite his anger at her turning him down after their kiss in the “What Lies Beneath” episode.
Yet, Emily’s trust in him is short lived once she gets a warning call from none other than A telling her to get out of the cabin. Of course, she doesn’t, and what ensues is a tense standoff between Emily and Nate as he holds a knife to Paige’s throat, threatening to take Paige away just like Emily took Maya away from him.
Not surprisingly, Nate is Maya’s stalker as well as her killer.
What is surprising is what comes after the dramatic chase through the woods, the tussle over the knife in the lighthouse, Emily stabbing Nate, and then Nate shooting Caleb (Tyler Blackburn). Yeah, Nate’s death was anything but assured, but what about “Pretty Little Liars” promising to reveal who A is? And what has crazy Mona (Janel Parrish) been up to during all this?
Mona sneaked out of the crazy house to meet up with someone else on the A team. But whatever their plan was never really took shape — other than Mona admitting that yeah, they had been framing Paige. Emily taking care of Nate solved one problem they were apparently having, and now they just need to get Maya’s phone from an unwitting Paige.
So who is Mona talking to? Toby (Keegan Allen). Because Toby is A, or at least one more member of the “PL”L A Team. Toby. Let that sink in for a moment, because it seems so wild and crazy considering how attentive and caring he’s always been with Spencer (Troian Bellisario).
Or has he? Toby was around quite a bit in the first season, and he was most definitely acting smitten with Spencer. But even before Spencer, there was his friendship and momentary relationship with Emily. Does that mean all of it was a ruse, just so he could get back at Ali and the girls after the Jenna incident?
That’s what the “Pretty Little Liars” summer season finale implied at least. It’ll be interesting to see what’s next now that we know he’s on the A team — especially considering the fact that Spencer still trusts him. But fans will just have to wait until the Halloween special, or, more likely, until the “PLL” winter season.
