Forecast discussion: An area of high pressure from Bermuda continues to give Providence warm and now humid weather. An Air Quality Alert will be put out for the southern part of Rhode Island, due to the high amount of ozone in the air. The tropical feel in the air will continue right into next week. A weak cold front on Sunday may bring some much needed showers and thunderstorms by the afternoon. Until then, Saturday will see a mix of clouds and hazy sunshine, with temperatures reaching the lower 90’s in the capital city. There is a slight chance for thunderstorms to continue after early Monday morning. But, the front will be moving offshore by Monday afternoon, so we will be losing the trigger to help create more thunderstorms.
The hot weather will return for Tuesday and parts of Wednesday. Right now, some models are saying we could reach high temperatures in the middle 90’s. However, I feel the models are over-forecasting the high temperatures, as we will remain in the lower 90’s. A cold front will come through the Northeast U.S., and may create another round of showers and thunderstorms Wednesday afternoon. A little bit of cooler air will finally arrive from Canada to start the next weekend. Temperatures are forecasted to fall into the middle 80’s, with less humidity. It will be tough sleeping weather without air conditioning, as lows will remain in the lower 70’s.
In the tropics, there are no developmental areas in the Atlantic Ocean. In the Eastern Pacific, Tropical Storm Emilia weakened significantly today, as maximum winds lowered to 50 mph. it is forecasted to weaken and dissipate by Sunday. Meanwhile, Hurricane Fabio has maximum sustained winds of 80 mph. Fabio is now the fifth tropical system in the Eastern Pacific this year. What is so unusual about this season is that the Eastern Pacific does not see its fifth hurricane until next month. Fabio will strengthen for 12 more hours, before weakening due to being in colder waters.
