Notes from Women’s Subdivision I (BRA)
LONDON, 11:11 a.m.: The judges are marching out to Muse’s “Survival,” the official Olympic song.
ROTATION ONE: Italy on bars, Australia on floor.
Fashion notes! Aussies in green and white, the colors we’re used to from them. Italy is in bright blue. Nataliya Kononenko is in sleeveless green and white.
Nataliya Kononenko, vault: Yurchenko layout with a hop back.
Carlotta Ferlito, bars: Very much improved work from Ferlito here. Nice open swing. Routine included a Jaeger, bail to toe hecht, etc. Arabian double front dismount with a hop.
Marta Pihan-Kulesza, beam: Dramatic yellow and black leo. Makes her standing Arabian well, but then big wobble on her next element. Comes off the beam on her front aerial to side aerial combo. Takes a lot of time setting up her dismount, and I see why — it’s a Patterson! Lands very low, nearly touches her quads to the mat, but makes it and doesn’t touch her hands. Good for her on that! 12.166.
Emily Little, floor: Stuck full in back out, good start. Full in tuck, also well done, very near stuck. 1.5 to double full, well done! Hands down on double pike! Oh dear! 12.66.
Zoi Lima, vault: Didn’t see it.
Erika Fasana, bars: Nice toe Tkatchev. Double layout dismount, just a small hop. Well done.
Tina Erceg, beam: Jump on mount. Front aerial. Side somie. Double turn. Comes off on something, didn’t see what.
Larrissa Miller, floor: Dramatic piece with female vocals. Front layout full to front double twist, nice. Arabian double front, takes a few steps back to save it — underrotated. 1.5 to front layout. Double pike to close.
Valeriia Maksyuta, vault: Sits her DTY. Second vault is handspring front pike full, landed with a large step to the side. 12.8.
Vanessa Ferrari, bars: Hit routine for Ferrari with full twisting double tuck dismount. Here comes Italy!
Giulia Steingruber, beam: Punch front. Bhs, layout to two feet. Switch half to back tuck. Didn’t see her dismount, but she made it fine.
Ashleigh Brennan, floor: Beautiful full in mount to split jump. Double tuck with tiny hop back. Front layout full. 14.2.
Giorgia Campana, bars: Jaeger. Double layout. Not as smooth as the rest of the group, but still a hit routine. 12.766. Routine not as complicated as the rest, either.
Lorena Quinones, beam: Jump to splits mount, unusual! Front aerial, bhs, layout. Switch to back tuck, small wobble. Punch front. Sheep. Switch side. Really has the look and movement of a good NCAA gymnast — college coaches, are you watching? Bhs walkout to 1.5 twist dismount.
Lauren Mitchell, floor: “Besame Mucho” with Freddie Mercury lyrics. Whip to Arabian double front to single stag, pretty good. Full in pike, a little rough on the landing, kind of took an awkward leap thingie forward, just a little bit. Double turn in sit position. 2.5 to front layout to beat jump. Switch ring to switch full, a little lacking in amplitude on the second leap. Double pike to split jump, well done. Finishes with a flourish. People are kind of divided on this routine, but personally I like it a lot. 14.833.
Maria Homolova, beam: Side aerial, pause. Side somie. Wolf full — unusual skill in this code. Dismounts with 1.5 twist with a hop.
ROTATION TWO: Italy on beam, Australia on vault.
Georgia Bonora, vault: FTY, small hop, nicely done.
Nataliya Kononenko, bars: Jump to high, toe full to Tkatchev to pak. Maloney to stalde rfullt o to Tkatchev half to Jaeger and falls. Sigh. Beautiful blind to double front, small hop. Sigh. 13.433.
Erika Fasana, beam: Comes off on bhs, layout to two feet! Hmmm.Switch to back tuck. Side somie. Front aerial, wobble. Both of her feet and her right shin is heavily taped. Switch half. Double pike dismount. Italy will want to drop that one. Fortunately, they have a strong beam lineup.
Tina Erceg, floor: Triple full. 1.5 to front layout full. Kind of a dance club beat. Double pike. 2.5 to end. Nice routine.
Ashleigh Brennan, vault: Tsuk 1.5 maybe? Whatever it was, took a big step back. 13.7.
Zoi Lima, bars: Hit routine but lacking in difficulty from Portugal’s nominee here.
Vanessa Ferrari, beam: Jump to middle splits. Bhs to layout to two feet, small wobble but OK. Front aerial, bhs, layout. Sheep. Ferrari is getting it done on this event. Double pike with a hop. Hit routine.
Giulia Steingruber, floor: Wonderful high Strug to open. Heavy classical piece. Double tuck. Crashes her 1.5 to front layout full. Double pike to end, nice and high. That’s got to be a disappointment. She’s an excellent tumbler as well as being a vaulter. Makes it look so easy.
Lauren Mitchell, vault: Just glides into a very nice FTY, tiny little bounce upward on landing.
Valeriia Maksyuta, bars: Falls on her Jaeger. And on her double front with full twist dismount. This has not been her day…
Elisabetta Preziosa, beam: Full turn. Switch to back tuck, teensy adjustment. Needle scale briefly. Switch ring. Front aerial, bhs, layout. Hands down on double pike dismount! So Italy will have to count a fall on beam…Preziosa looks disappointed, and no wonder! She was probably hoping for event finals on this event, where she won bronze at last year’s European Championships.
Lorena Quinones, floor: Rodrigo y Gabriela. Double Arabian, too much power, actually puts her hands down and goes into handstand OOB. Oops. Switch side half. Double pike to end.
Emily Little, vault: Excellent DTY, nearly stuck. 14.766.
Do Thi Ngan Thuong, bars: Jump to high. Clear hip. Pak, legs apart. Ray. Full turn not in handstand to Tkatchev. Full twisting double tuck dismount, small hop. Doesn’t use grips — unusual! 11.466.
Carlotta Ferlito, beam: Bhs, layout to two feet, excellent! Full turn. Nearly loses it on full turn with leg at head. Front aerial, bhs, layout. Switch ring, questionable whether they’ll give it to her. But what’s impressive about her is how fit she looks, that her form and line has come quite a long way in the past two years. She looks the best she ever has for this competition. 2.5 twist dismount, well done, tiny hop. 14.425.
Maria Homolova, floor: Lovely lyrcial piece, but lacking difficulty. Double pike to open. Double twist to close. Stops at the edge of the podium and waves with both hands to the Slovaks in the crowd. 12.066.
Marta Pihan-Kulesza, floor: New routine for her this year, a faster, jazzier piece than she’s used in the past. Front layout full walkout, roundoff to 2.5 to single stag. Nice! Arabian double front to single stag again. Good triple turn. So far, so good for Marta! Really flirts with the audience in her dance. She can shimmy. Lovely hands and arms too! Tourjete full to shimmy! Front double full to end. Great routine, wonderfully presented! Runs off the podium to a hug and a high five from her coach.
ROTATION THREE: Italy on floor, Australia on bars.
Giulia Steingruber, vault: Rudi! Looked like she came onto the table a bit flat, but got the lift she needed. Bit of a bounce to the side, but not bad. 14.783. Second vault: Goes for Tsuk double full, but hands down! Not enough experience with that. We’ll see if that keeps her out of finals.
Emily Little, bars: Clear hip to toe blind to Jaeger. Bail to toe hecht to high. Toe stalder to toe full…double layout. Well done.
Zoi Lima, beam: Bhs, layout was all I saw.
Elisabetta Preziosa, floor: Double pike. 1.5 to front layout. Very jazzy piece of music that becomes incredibly music-box balletic and then frenetically jazzy right at the end. Double tuck to end.
Lorena Quinones, vault: FTY. 13.8.
Georgia Bonora, bars: Jump to high, Comaneci, kicks the bar. Bail to toe hecht to high, full turn to blind, front giant (legs apart) to double front with a big step forward.
Valeriia Maksyuta, beam: Fell, but I didn’t see on what.
Vanessa Ferrari, floor: “Last of the Mohecians.” Double double tuck, cranked around and stuck! Ooh. Full in tuck to back tuck, nicely done. Audience likes her. 1.5 to front layout full, well done. Switch ring to Tourjete full. Ferrari is really pulling out the stops here. Double pike to end. One of the biggest rounds of applause of the day! 14.9.
Maria Homolova, vault: Didn’t see first vault. Second vault was a handspring front tuck.
Ashleigh Brennan, bars: Toe full to Tkatchev, not bad for someone who usually doesn’t do bars. Stalder to bail to toe hecht, blind to front giant half. Double layout, a little piked, small hop forward. Not bad though!
Do Thi Ngan Thuong, beam: Didn’t see anything except a small wobble on a full turn. 11.966.
Carlotta Ferlito, floor: Kind of a club remix sort of piece, soft techno. Suits her. Triple full to single stag, well done. 2.5 twist. Double tuck. Memmel turn. Front aerial as the music changes. Double pike, small hop back and OOB. The crowd loves this routine too!
Marta Pihan-Kulesza, vault: Handspring front pike half.
Larrissa Miller, bars: Jump to high, inbar stalder to inbar full to Gienger. Bail to Ray. Inbar blind to Jaeger, very nice. Stalder full. Full in tuck, basically stuck, steps back to salute the judges very quickly. Very nice routine. 14.025.
Nataliya Kononenko, beam: Roll on mount. Roundoff, layout to two feet with bent knees, wobble. Front aerial, wobble. Side somie was OK. Punch front and jumps off the beam. 12.066.
Erika Fasana, floor: Double layout, small hop, keeps it in bounds. Full in tuck, nicely done. Switch ring. Tourjete full. Fast paced elegance. 1.5 to front layout. Switch full. Double pike, step back. Crowd loves this one too. 14.033.
Tina Erceg, vault: Handspring front tuck half. Second vault: Stuck FTY. Lacked a little amplitude, but that’s OK. 13.5.
ROTATION FOUR: Italy on vault, Australia on beam.
Notes: Lauren Mitchell misses her flight series in warmups. She’s not looked her very best here in training, though she has done all right here today.
Elisabetta Preziosa, vault: FTY, well landed.
Lorena Quinones, bars: Off on toe stalder on the low bar. Dismount is double front with a big step forward.
Emily Little, beam: Punch front, solid. Front aerial, bhs, layout. Switch wolf to switch to back tuck, very cool. Double pike to end, just a small step back. 1.5 to front layout.
Valeriia Maksyuta, floor: New routine for her this year…double tuck to open. Conservative start for her. Her music seems vaguely Turkish. Double full to end.
Vanessa Ferrari, vault: DTY, got it around. Ferrari’s having a good day! 14.366.
Maria Homolova, bars: Kicks the low bar hard on Jaeger cast and jumps off and kind of grabs her foot. That has to hurt. Takes a few steps on her double pike dismount too.
Georgia Bonora, beam: Front aerial, bhs, layout. Onodi, very nice. But then comes off on…what was that?
Nataliya Kononenko, floor: Lovely lyrical piece by Yanni. Double tuck to open. Double pike to end. Having a moment in her coach’s arms at the end of this routine. You take a beating as a gymnast, mentally and physically, to prepare for a competition like this. 12.5.
Carlotta Ferlito, vault: Nice Yurchenko 1.5 and you can hear one of the Italians let out a little high pitched yelp of triumph all the way up here in the press gallery.
Marta Pihan-Kulesza, bars: Shaposh to bail to Ray. Clear hip to clear blind to Jaeger, well done. Bail to inside spin to double front dismount. Very nice, Marta! AA finals?
Ashleigh Brennan, beam: Front aerial, bhs, layout. Switch to back tuck. Side somie with legs straight. She doesn’t have the difficulty to make event finals I don’t think, but she’s so steady with what she does do. Side aerial. Side somie. Small wobble on full turn. Hands down on roundoff, double pike that she just walks into! Oh-oh…that’s very bad news for Australia. I’m not sure, frankly, about this team for team finals. 13.066.
Zoi Lima, floor: Carribbean beat. Didn’t see the routine. 12.033.
Erika Fasana, vault: Slightly crunchy Yurchenko 1.5, but makes it just fine. Again, a little high pitched yelp from one of her teammates. 14.0.
Tina Erceg, bars: Jaeger. Pak. Toe hecht to high. Clear hip to double twist dismount, small hop.
Lauren Mitchell, beam: Chest roll mount, one of her signatures. Bhs, bhs to two feet, layout to two feet, steps back but doesn’t wobble. Front aerial, leg comes way up and the arena holds its breath for a second while she regains her balance. And regain it she does, but there will be no event final for her on this event. Switch to standing front tuck. Switch ring. Humphrey turn (triple turn in sit position.) Switch half to back tuck. Bhs, bhs, double pike, hop back. Don’t quite know what to say about the Aussie performance overall: it wasn’t terrible, but they made some errors that just shouldn’t have been made. 14.3.
The Aussies are having a nice moment hugging and congratulating each other, but I would guess that there’s quite a lot of uncertainty for them right now. They know they did all right, but was it enough to make team finals? That’s hard to say right now.
Giulia Steingruber, bars: 13.266.
