Notes from Subdivision III (USA, CAN, GBR, FRA)
Notes from Subdivision IV (RUS, CHN, GER)
ROTATION FOUR: Japan on vault, Romania on beam.
Yuko Shintake, vault: FTY I think.
Ralitsa Mileva, bars: Geinger. Smiling and happy after her dismount, helping Laura Svilpaite chalk the bars.
Diana Bulimar, beam: Bhs to two feet, layout to two feet. Front aerial, bhs, layout, very very solid! Switch half. Switch side. Beam is a hard event to make a comeback on, but if anyone can do it, it’s Romania. Little wobble on her full turn. Switch to back tuck. Bhs, bhs, double pike, just a small hop.
Simona Castro, floor: Repesenting Chile via the University of Denver…double full dismount.
Koko Tsurumi, vault: FTY, small hop back. Nice form. Not a lot of power.
Sandra Izbasa, beam: Front aerial, bhs, layout to two feet. Switch half, small wobble/bounce back. Front pike somie. Full turn with leg up. Side aerial. Switch to split jump? 2.5 twist dismount.
Salma Mahmoud, floor: Music sounds very Egyptian. Double pike with a bounce back to open. Just makes her double pike dismount.
Rie Tanaka, vault: Sits her Yurchenko 1.5. Not even close.
Laura Svilpaite, bars: Hit routine with double pike dismount. Like much of the rest of her work, very nice with no difficulty to speak of.
Camera pans to Elisabeth Seitz and Janine Berger of Germany looking a bit bored.
Larisa Iordache, beam: Bhs, tuck full, small wobble and step back but deals with it. Double turn, again a tiny wobble. Switch half. Front aerial, small wobble. Front pike somie. She doesn’t look quite on to me, though the switch to back tuck was very nice. The missed training time seems to have affected her a little. Roundoff, bhs, triple full all the way around with a step back. Getting a kiss from Mariana Bitang. Larisa seems to think her night didn’t quite go as well as it might have also.
Phan Thi Ha Thanh, floor: Bond piece — Libertaea? Excellent 2.5 twist to open. Love her dance — she can really move!
Asuka Teramoto, vault: DTY.
Lim Heem Wei, bars: A smiling Lim is leaving the podium with her coach’s arm around her after a hit routine. Both look very happy.
Catalina Ponor, beam: Jump to splits mount. Switch ring and big wobble. A Romanian fan sitting above me in the stands lets out a little scream as she struggles. Onodi, bhs, layout to two feet. Front aerial, bhs, layout, leg comes up and another wobble. Switch to full twisting back handspring. No, this is not Romania’s night. Roundoff, double pike, step back. I do not think that will make event finals, but we’ll see. 15.033. So she will make it — in 7th place.
Sasa Golob, floor: Mounted with a double pike.
Ana Maria Izurieta, bars: Kicks the low bar as she winds up for her double layout dismount and falls on it. Ouch. That probably hurt her foot. Getting some encouragement from Jesus Carballo, Sr. as they walk off the podium together. She’s probably concerned about her AA chances. 12.6.
Celine van Gerner, floor: Perfect double tuck to mount but too low on her 1.5 to front tuck full and sits down. Music is kind of Disney — xylophones and female vocals and such. Double pike. Oh, that’s what’s on her leotard — it’s a tulip! A sparkling orange tulip! Cool. Anyway…
ROTATION THREE: Romania on bars, Japan on floor.
Ana Maria Izurieta, vault: Didn’t see it.
Diana Bulimar, bars: Shaposh. Stalder full to Ttkatchev. Clear full to giant to bail to Ray, stlader blind to half turn, giant to full twisting double tuck.
Celine van Gerner, beam: Saw her roundoff, double tuck dismount but nothing else.
Yuko Shintake, floor: Is this “My Old Kentucky Home”? 2.5 to front layout half. 1.5 to front layout full. Double full. Double tuck to end. 13.633.
Ralitsa Mileva, vault: Handspring front tuck half.
Diana Chelaru, bars: Clear full to Gienger. Blind to Jaeger. Some foot/leg form. Bail to Ray. Clear hip. Full twisting double tuck, small hop. Not bad and not great. 13.733.
Simona Castro, beam: Side aerial, well controlled.
Yu Minobe, floor: Hit routine gets a lot of applause. Big, epic music for this little person.
Larisa Iordache, bars: Shaposh, clear hip, stalder full. Tkatchev to Pak, stalder half, Ray…full twisting double tuck dismount, tiny hop.
Salma Mahmoud, beam: Side aerial to two feet. Front layout full dismount.
Asuka Teramoto, floor: 2.5 to front layout. Quick work! Double pike. Switch to switch full. Double turn. Front double full to single stag. Switch half. Nice triple full to end!
Laura Svilpaite, vault: Sits both her vaults.
Sandra Izbasa, bars: Hecht mount. Clear hip full and…comes off! Has to jump down! Oh, this is not Romania’s night. 1.5 to Jaeger. Clear hip to bail to Ray. Blind to double front with a step forward. Hmmmm….at this rate Romania will be behind Russia and maybe China too…
Sasa Golob, beam: Big wobble on punch front. Bhs, layout to two feet. Switch to back tuck. Inside full turn. Front aerial, small wobble. Switch half. Jumps. Front layout full. 13.033.
Rie Tanaka, floor: Wow! When the Japanese salute, they say “hai!” and something else to the judges. Front double full to front layout half. Double tuck, perfectly done, legs totally together, stuck landing. 1.5 to front layout half. Music incorporates James Bond theme and “The Pink Panther.” She makes it very, very elegant. Love it! Double pike, step forward.
Lim Heem Wei, vault: Didn’t see it.
ROTATION TWO: Japan on beam, Romania on vault
Diana Chelaru, vault: DTY, legs apart as she comes off the table but otherwise quite good. Tiny hop.
Sasa Golob, bars: Jump to high, Clear full. Blind to front giant to Jaeger, nice. Clear hip to bail. legs a bit apart. Toe hecht to high. Full twisting double tuck with a big step back, got surprised by the mat.
Yuko Shintake, beam: Side aerial. Switch ring. Front aerial, bhs, layout, wobble. Double pike, small hop. Yuko looks thrilled.
Lim Heem Wei, floor: Double pike, hands down.
Catalina Ponor, vault: DTY, little bounce back.
Celine van Gerner, bars: Hit routine with full in tuck dismount that delights her coach. Celine looks very happy as well.
Rie Tanaka, beam: Switch, wolf. Onodi. Side somie, smallest of wobbles. Switch half. Double pike with a step back.
Ana Maria Izurieta, floor: Triple full to open, well done. Full in tuck, also very nice and stuck. 1.5 to double full. 2.5 twist to end. Very nice routine, very dramatic. Epic miusic.
Sandra Izbasa, vault: Mustafina, pretty good. Very good DTY, excellent in the air and one small step on the landing. Vault finals!
Simona Castro, bars: Clear hip. Jaeger. Overshoots her overshoot and has to do a quick half turn and kip off.
Yu Minobe, beam: Jump to scale. Switch to back pike. Onodi. Back tuck to Korbut. Has a very nice look on beam. Front aerial. Sheep. Side somie. Double pike with a step forward.
Ralitsa Mileva, floor: Double tuck. Long wait before double pike dismount. She was one of the few gymnasts to walk in opening ceremonies, along with her countryman Jordan Jovtchev.
Larisa Iordache, vault: DTY, small hop. Very nice. She’s on track for AA finals. 15.1.
Salma Mahmoud, bars: Impressive swing and work overall. Jaeger. Toe front half dismount.
Asuka Teramoto, beam: Running front walkover mount. Nice double turn. Onodi. Bhs, layout. I wouldn’t give her the connection with the Onodi. Still nice though. Front aerial. Like her cartwheel to down on beam — stylish. Switch to back tuck. Switch side. Jumps. Nice triple full dismount! 14.466.
Sherine El Zeiny, floor: Hurts her leg on her last pass on floor and is having a heck of a time limping off the podium. Finally makes it off and into the arms of her coach, who carries her out of the arena. 11.0.
Laura Svilpaite, floor: All eyes on her as she’s the last to perform here. A tango! 1.5 to punch front, small hop upwards out of it. Roundoff, double pike, step back. Switch to Tourjete half. A lovely presence on the international scene, but just not enough difficulty to be significant. We could all take a lesson from her form, however. Double full. Double tuck that really makes you go yikes, but she makes it.
ROTATION ONE: Japan on bars, Romania on floor.
Notes: The Romanians aren’t competing Diana Bulimar on floor? What? Fashion notes: Aw, the Egyptians march out holding hands! Japanese women in the “lands of the rising sun” leos with one black sparkly sleeve, very dramatic. Romanians in mostly white with red, yellow and blue.
Phan Thi Ha Thanh, vault: Crashes DTY. 12.666. Will vault again anyway. Rudi, makes it to her feet, but barely.
Asuka Teramoto, bars: Didn’t see it.
Laura Svilpaite, beam: Didn’t see this either.
Diana Chelaru, floor: Full in tuck to standing back tuck, wow, that was some determination! Not fazed by the fact that she was almost in the corner. Pretty well connected too. Whip to triple full, very well done. Double pike? Her choreography is quite fun in person, and she’s doing well. The music is very “big”. Double tuck to end. Very businesslike, hit routine.
Sasa Golob, vault: Balks and just does what looks like a kind of handspring thing and falls. Oh dear…
Rie Tanaka, bars: Shaposh to Pak, stalder to Maloney to bail to toe hecht to high, very nice so far! Full to blind to Jaeger, good. Great double layout dismount. That was a wonderful routine!
Lim Heem Wei, beam: Didn’t see it.
Catalina Ponor, floor: “Fever.” Wonderful double layout, excellent. Two whips to full in double pike. Quad turn. And then she begins to work her choreo! Switch ring to the music, with Tourjete half added on. And — oh no — balks on her third pass, just does a tucked full! No floor final. Oh no! Double pike to end. She looks distraught. My my…14.6. That actually might not take her out of the final.
Celine van Gerner, vault: Yurchenko 1.5, a little messy at the end but otherwise fine.
Koko Tsurumi, bars: Toe stalder to blind, full pirouette to Ono, 1.5 to Tkatchev. Jaeger, caught too close to the bar but she moves on fine. Bail to Ray. Beautiful stuck double layout dismount.
Ana Maria Izurieta, beam: Falls on roundoff, layout stepout mount. Nice bhs, bhs, layout to two feet, small wobble, off to the side. Side aerial to side somie combo. Jumps. Sits 2.5 twist dismount as well.
Sandra Izbasa, floor: Pink Floyd guitar piece, lovely in here with these acoustics. Full in pike, hop back. Great triple full to single stag. Full in tuck, no back tuck out, landed too low to do it plausibly. Toujete half. Switch to switch full. Excellent 2.5 to front layout full for the reigning Olympic champion on this event! Lovely work overall. Tumbling might have been a little cleaner, however. 15.066.
Simona Castro, vault: Missed it.
Yu Minobe, bars: Nice routine and then sits her double front dismount.
Ralitsa Mileva, beam: Falls early in the routine. Front aerial to back pike, not bad. Wolf full, small wobble. Needs to work on her execution a bit, especially on her leaps. Switch to wolf. Full turn with leg at head.
Larisa Iordache, floor: Ah, she performs! Double double tuck, terrific! What foot pain? Full in tuck, STUCK. Legs landed apart but STUCK. Switch to switch full. Spicy Spanish beat. But then misses her footing on her whip to triple, goes for the triple anyway, amazingly makes it almost all the way around but still falls. She’s stopped smiling now. Double tuck with a hop back. No floor finals for her. What a shame. 13.8.
Salma Mahmoud, vault: FTY, rather weak but landed fine.
Sherine El-Zeiny, beam: Punch front. Switch half. Nice toepoint! Front aerial, bhs. Front pike somie.
LONDON, 7:46 p.m.: Romania and Japan will take the stage next, each trying to qualify among the top eight teams and move on to Monday’s team final. It’s already been a very dramatic day, courtesy of the U.S., Russia and China, and it can only get more so. Stay tuned.
