It was a great start for Canada’s top singles players in men’s and women’s tennis on Monday from Wimbledon.
Thornhill, Ontario’s Milos Raonic defeated Tatsuma Ito of Japan in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, and Blainville, Quebec’s Alexandra Wozniak defeated Marina Erakovic of New Zealand 6-2, 6-1.
According to www.london2012.com, Raonic will now take on Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France, who was pushed to the limit against Brazil’s Thomasz Bellucci before winning 6-7, 6-4, 6-4 on Sunday. Tsonga, who advanced to the 2008 Australian Open final before losing to Serbia’s Novak Djokovic, is the favourite in tomorrow’s action. The Frenchman will also have an extra day’s rest which is always an advantage in a tournament like this one.
This will be the first time Raonic would have ever played Tsonga. The two were to play head-to-head at the Davis Cup in Vancouver in February, but Raonic had to pull out because of injury, and was replaced by Frank Dancevic.
Wozniak meanwhile will play either French Open finalist Sara Errani of Italy or Venus Williams of the United States in round two.
