A July 17, 2012, article posted on the Daily Grail website reported that Reddit.com members are involved in a heavy discussion about a glitch in the matrix. For those of you not familiar with the reference, they’re talking about the 1999 movie, “The Matrix”, a mind-boggling action/adventure movie that takes a look at reality vs. virtual reality. Since virtual reality and matrix theories are popular topics of discussion on Coast to Coast AM, it only made sense to follow the trail to Reddit.com and see what all the fuss was about.
When “The Matrix” hit theaters in 1999 viewers either loved it or hated it, there was no in-between. The concept was difficult to follow: What if everything you believe to be real is simply a suggestion of reality, planted in your head by a machine? What if you’re not really here at all, you only think you’re here, sitting in front of your computer reading this article, because the machine your brain is hooked up to is telling you you’re sitting in front of a computer?
You’re not really drinking a cup of coffee right now, you only think you’re drinking it because the machine is programmed to fill up your “life” with “real” experiences. When you finish your coffee the machine will provide additional experiences: you’ll put the cup in the sink, you’ll pick up your briefcase, and you’ll head out the door to work.
But, in reality, none of these things are actually happening. Your body isn’t really sitting at the kitchen table sipping coffee. It’s hooked up to a huge machine, along with all of the other billions of human bodies that occupy this planet. All of our thoughts, experiences and even dreams are generated by a computer. Reality only exists in your mind.
Jim Blascovich and Jeremy Bailenson, two pioneering experts in the field of virtual reality, appeared on Coast to Coast AM on April 16, 2011.
“Virtual reality, for us, is any reality that’s not a person’s grounded reality,” Blascovich said. “We go back and forth between virtual and grounded realities all of the time, without the use of technology, through our mind wanderings and dreams, he continued. “There’s different types of virtual realities and there’s even a lack of separation among them,” Bailenson added, citing how the digital environs of the online role-playing game World of Warcraft reportedly seeps into the dream lives of hardcore players.
On January 22, 2011, Will Elliott appeared on Coast to Coast AM and he believes he was wrongly, or perhaps even intentionally, diagnosed with schizophrenia after becoming aware of the false Matrix-like reality around him.
“Anyone who tries to break free of the system is dealt with,” he continued. According to Elliott, he was targeted for group stalking by a government agency working with malicious off-world entities (reptilian shape-shifters). Elliott acknowledged that his story is problematic for those still deluded by the Matrix reality, including many psychiatrists, who conclude such awakened people are mentally ill and in need of medication. “Psychiatry has been established as a gate keeping force to keep people in the Matrix reality, where we are regarded as a human resource by those who run this Matrix and run this world,” he explained.
The “glitch in the matrix” that the Reddit users are talking about refers to those little split-seconds of time where the computer controlling your virtual reality has a hiccup. For example, in the movie, our hero, played by Keanu Reeves, sees a black cat walk across his path and a few seconds later the same cat makes exactly the same trek across his path again. When Reeves puts the episode down as a case of deja vu, he’s told it’s actually a glitch in the matrix.
“The Matrix” suggests that these glitches aren’t merely deja vu or sleep deprivation or some mental disorder. A glitch is an indication that there’s been an interruption in your virtual reality program. It may be a minute interruption, but it’s an interruption nonetheless, and instead of overlooking it, like you’ve always done, maybe it’s time to wake up and smell the coffee.
Which is exactly what the folks over at Reddit.com are doing. And if you think all of this talk of a matrix and virtual reality is laughable, wait until you hear some of the glitch reports these guys are talking about.
We have a breakfast laid on at work every morning, just a simple buffet of eggs, bacon, what have you. Nothing huge and it’s really only to feed about a dozen people or so. I am usually one of the first guys from my team to get to work and the kitchen was deserted as usual. I walked into the little kitchen, there was a ceramic egg tray thing with 12 eggs in it, like the bottom half of an egg carton with a socket for each egg. All spaces are filled with warm freshly boiled eggs.
I take one, walk over to the garbage bin, shuck the shell then I walk back over to the food and stop dead. There are 12 eggs in the tray again. No one entered the room while I was peeling the thing. I touched the mystery egg it was the same temp as the other eggs around it.
My sister and I were hanging in the living room, watching TV. We both saw our mom walk through the other room, and through the adjacent hall. Maybe 20 mins later, she came in from the backyard. My sister and I looked at each other confused, and asked her how she got back outside. She didn’t know what we were talking about, she had been outside for hours.
My dad had this little toy monkey that he used to call his “favorite child” and tease me and my siblings with it. Not in a bad way, but it was really frustrating to us and we spent hours trying to steal it from him.
Well anyways, one day we finally got it and threw it into the garbage after drawing on it and mangling it for a bit. We My dad laughed and searched for it a bit but basically figured we had thrown it out and gave up after a week or so.
Anyways, a few years later (when I was about 17), I’m walking down the street in Toronto (I don’t live in TO, was just visiting friends) and see this little orange object on the side of the road. When I walk over to it, I pick it up and see that it was the EXACT SAME MONKEY. It even had the black sharpie lines on it from when we drew all over it. I honestly cannot even come up with the chances of that happening, especially considering our garbage is sent to a local dump and is nowhere near Toronto.
I was in class one day, sitting in a group of three people including myself. We were talking and my friend dropped his pen on the desk. I saw it stall in mid air for a second then drop on his desk. My friend asked “Did anyone else see that?” All my friends saw it, and it was just the weirdest thing I’ve ever seen. To this day I have no explanation for it.
Woke up one morning when I was 16 or so, and realized that I had forgotten how to tie my shoes. Like, this action I had done every day almost since I would walk, was wiped from my mind. I had to learn all over again.
Now, if that last one doesn’t sound like some sort of weird time glitch to you then think about it. How many years ago was it when you first learned to tie your shoes? And now it’s just a reflex action, something you don’t even think about. You probably haven’t had to concentrate on tying your shoes for decades. So how could you just… forget? And not just forget, but completely have it wiped from your mind, to the point where you had to relearn it all over again?
What about you? Have you experienced a glitch in the matrix? Have you had one of those split-second reality-shattering occurrences that makes you question your very existence?
