The season seven finale of How I Met Your Mother aired on May 14, and for the last three months viewers have been eagerly awaiting the season eight premiere, which airs on September 24 on CBS.
Last season left off with Ted and Victoria driving into the sunset, in what appeared to be a life-altering event for both of them and perhaps the beginning of the end of the show. But it still isn’t clear if Victoria is the mother we have all been waiting to meet. Since she was introduced, Victoria has always been an unanswered question in Ted’s life. In season one’s “The Wedding,” Ted alludes to the fact that meeting her that night changed his life forever. That doesn’t mean she sticks around forever, though, and one can’t help but wonder if Victoria being the runaway bride, much like Stella was, is going to end badly.
If there is one thing the creators of HIMYM are great at, it is foreshadowing. Given that Ted is telling this story in the future, there is a lot of room to include little cues to future events, and if you pay close enough attention, viewers can sense what is going to happen before it does. There are no mistakes or coincidences, so the fact that Ted was left at the altar before and now is on the other side of the scenario will no doubt lead to a moment of self-realization, or if nothing else, another heartbreak.
The other relationships in question at the onset of season eight are those of Barney and Quinn, and Barney and Robin. We know now that Robin is the lucky lady who gets to marry Barney (assuming that wedding actually goes through), however as of the end of season seven, he is engaged to Quinn. How will the rest of their relationship play out? Will Quinn be around while Barney and Robin attempt to fight their feelings, or will Barney realize early on that Quinn isn’t ‘The One’ and cancel the engagement right away? Either way, Barney and Robin’s rollercoaster of a relationship is definitely not over, and viewers are excited to see what the road to the altar is going to be like for this couple of commitmentphobes.
There is also going to be the introduction of a new cast member, Janeane, played by Abby Elliott of SNL fame. Janeane is rumored to be a new love interest for someone in the group, however it is not clear who. Since we know it isn’t Marshall, who is too in love with Lily and little baby Marvin to stray, it has to be Barney or Ted. So where will she fit in? Will she be the one who breaks Ted and Victoria up for good, or will she simply be another speed-bump for Barney on his road to life-long happiness with Robin?
The beginning of season eight comes with many questions, none of which can be answered until the story unfolds starting Monday, September 24 on CBS. Until then, comment below and discuss how you feel about the future of the entire HIMYM cast.
