The recent comments by president of the fast food company Chick-Fil-A Dan Cathy regarding his opposition to gay marriage have sparked a surge of controversy from both sides of the issue, with so called liberals rushing to boycott, and so called conservatives rushing to support the restaurant. Clearly all involved in this meaningless and shallow morality contest could be described as intellectual bottom feeders, however the right wing anti gay camp seems to win the prize for ridiculousness in this instance.
In an effort to preserve what they perceive as family values, many self described Christians have been flocking to the fast food company’s restaurant to show their support for Cathy’s comments by scarfing down as much preservative, antibiotic, hormone, corn syrup and pesticide injected food as they can get.
Unfortunately these churchgoers seem to only recognize threats toward their “traditional values” that involve the sex lives of strangers. This likely helps explain why they express no interest in a boycott of Walmart, for example, which violates “traditional values” by trafficking slave goods throughout the western world, yet also provides non demanding jobs and convenient meeting spots and cultural centers for many churchgoing folk. Ironically, many of these small town “traditional values” Americans are from areas that previously would have produced things like chicken, from small family farms without the need for arsenic, pesticide covered GMO feed and a host of other compromises that are made by purveyors of factory chicken like Chick-Fil-A.
Of course the increasingly superficial “left” isn’t much better, as they largely support the continuation of the same agenda from the Bush years, while overblowing pointless culture wars to make sure the gay community is kept agitated enough to continue voting democrat. If it weren’t for their quasi crusade against the personal opinions of a business owner who’s establishments wouldn’t be visited by anyone even passively interested in their health, their counterparts on the “right” wouldn’t have had the chance to remind us all how entertainingly deranged they can be. Meanwhile, those of us with better things to do are just left to feel bad for the whole lot of them.
