Do you love Rhone wines? Share in a deliciously Rhone experience on Saturday, July 14th, where you can blind taste 40 of the top finalists from the 2012 “Rhone Shootout.” Pit your palate against the experts and vote for your favorites! This exciting event will be at The Old Mint in San Francisco from 2:00 to 4:30 p.m. With so many Gold-medal winning wines being poured at this event, the choice of The Old Mint seems particularly fitting, considering it produced much of the nation’s currency until 1938.
New World Rhones won hearts and a bevy of Gold Medals at the Rhone Shootout Finals held Saturday, June 23rd in San Francisco. “We had an unprecedented number of wines scoring 90 points or higher in the Rhone Shootout. America’s Rhone producers are to be congratulated for turning their passion into something consumers and judges alike can truly love!” said Barbara Drady, Chief Wine Evangelist at Affairs of the Vine. Drady has been running the popular Pinot Shootout for over 10 years, and the Cabernet Shootout for 5. The Rhone Shootout made its debut in 2012.
Out of 250 wines entered, 96 scored well enough in several preliminary rounds to qualify for the finals: of these, 40 were selected to go on to the Blind Tasting. The judges evaluate no more than 32 wines during each preliminary screening, and each wine is blind tasted and rated on its own merit. All submitted wines are evaluated multiple times by different judging panels comprised of wine writers, wine buyers and sommeliers.
Regionally, wineries from the Santa Clara Valley, Santa Cruz Mountains, Sierra Foothills and Paso Robles, impressed overall as Rhone producing areas.
Wine loving consumers, press and trade are invited to experience Rhones from California, Oregon and beyond at Romancing the Rhones, held intentionally on Bastille Day to celebrate the love affair Americans have always had with things French. The Grand Tasting will feature 150+ wines from 40+ Rhone-producing wineries, many small and yet undiscovered.
Barrel Tastings in the Old Mint Vaults offers a peek at how the wine will taste when fully aged.
In a unique format, attendees will blind taste 40 finalists from the 2012 Rhone Shootout, pitting their palates against the experts and voting for their favorites. Awards will be presented to the top 3 favorites of the male and female tasters.
