A top foreign policy advisor for presumed Republican presidential nominee, Mitt Romney, says that Mr. Romney would stand behind Israel if it launches a strike against Iran in order to short-circuit that country’s ability to build nuclear weapons.
“Governor Romney believes we should employ any and all measures to dissuade the Iranian regime from its nuclear course,” said Dan Senor, adding that ” it is his fervent hope that diplomatic and economic measures will do so. In the final analysis, of course, no option should be excluded. Gov. Romney recognizes Israel’s right to defend itself, and it is right for America to stand with it.”
President Obama also recognizes Israels’s right to defend itself, but he feels the need to point out that, in the event of an Israeli strike on Iran, there would be consequences. Apparently he’s worried that an Israeli strike might destabilize the region.
Destabilize the region? How could the region become any more unstable than it already is?
The whole area is a basket-case. Every country in the Middle East hates the Israelis. The only friend that Israel had in the region, Egypt, can no longer be counted on. Egypt was thrown under the bus by the Obama Administration and the United Nations when they supported the Muslim Brotherhood in its overthrow of the “repressive” government of Hosni Mubarak.
Mubarak’s overthrow was a sequel to the regime change in Libya, where long-time gad-fly and local madman-in-charge Moammar Ghadafy was deposed, also by the Muslim Brotherhood.
For the last 16 months, the government of Syria has been fighting a civil war against the Muslim Brotherhood. Calls for the brutal regime of Bashar Assad to step down have come from all over the world, including from the Obama Administration. Mitt Romney has stated that there is no question that Assad must go, and in a perfect world, his removal would be a no-brainer. But this isn’t a perfect world.
There are two big problems which would remain outstanding if Assad is driven from power. The first is that the power void would be filled by the ever-growing influence of the Muslim Brotherhood. The second is Syria’s arsenal of chemical and biological weapons. Who would take possession of them? The Muslim Brotherhood? Hamas? Hezbollah? al-Qaeda? Maybe the weapons would be divided among all of those groups along with a hundred other terror organizations. Everybody gets their fair share.
Is Saudi Arabia next on the Muslim Brotherhood’s list? Stay tuned.
Despite having driven Saddam Hussein from power and installing a democratic government, the political situation in Iraq is far from settled. The same can be said for Afghanistan and Pakistan. Yemen is perched on the razor’s edge, and a haven for al-Qaeda. Lebanon is governed by Hezbollah, a terrorist organization (there is no other name for it) which has dedicated itself to the destruction of Israel.
The Palestinians still demand that elusive state to call their own. Their Hamas leaders are bound to by the constitution of Hamas to work toward the destruction of Israel and can’t be trusted to deal in a straightforward manner. It seems that they reach another “land for peace” agreement every other day with Israel and break the very next minute.
However, it is Iran which poses the greatest threat in the Middle East. The Iranians have had their fingers in everybody’s pie since the 1979 Revolution that deposed Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi. He was thrown under the bus by the Carter Administration.
Since that time, the Iranians have worked to spread their vision of Islam throughout the region and beyond. Each of the uprisings in Egypt, Libya, and Syria (one of Iran’s biggest allies) have Iranian fingerprints all over them. They are the largest financier of terror in the world, including clandestine operations run against Americans in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Iranian claims that they are not building a nuclear weapon are as transparent as a lie can be. They fanatically preach jihad in the mosques. They have sworn to destroy Israel and the United States and establish a world-wide caliphate under Shariah Law. Many of these fanatics will “martyr” themselves without question to accomplish that end. Right before our eyes, we are witnessing the rebirth of the Nazis, led by the Mad Mullahs who rule in Tehran and their band of Revolutionary Guards in charge in place of Hitler, Goering, Goebbels, and the SS.
Mitt Romney is absolutely right in declaring his support for Israel. President Obama ought to stop worrying so much about what might happen in the event of an Israeli strike on Iran and start preparing for the eventuality that it has to happen. Mr. Obama has done nothing to stop the Iranian nuclear program beyond the imposition of economic sanctions, but sanctions work only if the Russians and the Chinese go along with them. Even if they say they have, they haven’t because the Iranian program keeps advancing.
Mr. Obama should make it plain to the Iranians that if they do not dismantle their nuclear program, the U.S. will stand by and watch as the Israelis do it for them. He should also tell them that, even if he is not re-elected in November, his successor will carry on, and if the Israelis need our help, they will have it, come hell or high water.
Otherwise, Barack Obama may go down in history as the man who could have stopped a nuclear war, but didn’t.
