Engel Beltre was named Texas League Player of the Week. Sadly, that’s about the only thing that’s recently gone right for the Frisco RoughRiders.
The RoughRiders got out of Corpus Christi with their recent slide continuing, only managing to win the last of the four games at Whataburger Field.
It continues to show the how things have changed from the first half, when the Riders cruises to the Texas League South’s first playoff spot. Now, Frisco is bringing up the rear for the second half while Corpus Christi is in a fight with San Antonio for the second playoff spot; the Hooks currently lead by two games.
The Hooks got six runs in the fifth and sixth innings combined to pull away in the first game 7-5, as Andrew Simunic drove in five runs. Cody Buckel was tagged for five runs in five innings.
With the score tied 1-1, Simunic dealt the big blow with a grand slam in the fifth. Mike Olt responded with two RBI in the sixth and a two-run home run in the eighth, but two more runs for Corpus in the sixth made the difference.
The second game saw Jarred Cosart shut down the Riders to only three hits, while two errors led to two unearned runs in a 3-0 game.
Olt’s first throwing error put runners at first and third in the first inning, allowing Jonathan Singleton to drive in Austin Wales for the first run. Then, almost the same thing happened in the third, leading to Simunic driving in Rene Garcia.
The Riders, meanwhile, only got one runner past first base after they loaded the bases in the second but saw Val Majewski’s double play end the inning.
Another pitcher shut them down in the third game, as Jose Ciserrno went the distance and allowed one run on five hits in Corpus’ 3-1 win. Frisco did not score until the eighth inning, getting shut out for 17 straight innings.
They finally broke through in the final game, scoring four runs in the first three innings en route to an 11-3 win. Olt’s two run home run started the scoring in the first, ad then three wild pitches helped lead to four runs in the eighth inning.
The RoughRiders will now open a three-game series in Midland starting on Tuesday.
