The Frisco RoughRiders have struggled in the playoffs the last few years mainly because they tapered off near the end of the year, especially against their eventual playoff opponent. So far in 2012, that doesn’t seem to be a problem.
Cody Buckel and the RoughRiders picked up their second straight win against the Corpus Christi Hooks, 3-0 at Dr. Pepper Ballpark, less than one week before they’ll face the Hooks next week in the opening playoff round.
Buckel and three other pitchers combined to hold the Hooks to four hits on the night. The Riders have currently shut out Corpus for 16 straight innings.
The Hooks did get two men on in the second inning when Buckel gave up a hit and plunked one batter. But he struck out George Springer and Enrique Hernandez to get out of that jam.
The Riders then followed that in the bottom of the inning when Ryan Strausborger tripled and scored on Alex Buchholz’s grounder.
Strausborger tripled again in the fourth inning, this time driving in Tommy Mendonca. Buchholz’s fly ball drove in Strausborger for the second time..
The Hooks, meanwhile, only had one extra-base hit for the game, a third inning double from Robbie Grossman. They put two runners on again in the sixth off of Tim Murphy, but a double play helped get the Riders out of that inning. The Hooks did not get a runner past first base for the rest of the game.
