Sam, a brown purebred Boxer has been with Animal Rescue Foundation, Illinois (ARF-IL) for the past few months after coming in on a rescue transport from Kentucky in April of 2012. He was being fostered by Frank and Kim. This wonderful couple saw to it that the three to four year old 56 pound handsome lad was rescued, vetted and taken home to recover after a cruel twist of fate that ended him neglected, out on the street alone and heartworm positive. The heartworm was so severe that he ended up with a heart murmur.
When Sam arrived, he only weighed 42 pounds, had a severe respiratory infection plus a urinary tract infection. Sam was headed in one direction, straight toward the big doggie park in the sky until ARF-IL and specifically his foster family, Frank and Kim rescued him and set him on the road to recovery.
Sam was treated with heavy duty antibiotics, two separate lots, to treat his respiratory and urinary tract infections. He was also given three separate treatments of Immiticide for his heartworm infestation; taking 60 days for all treatments to be administered.
Sam was healed with a lot of tender loving care plus quality food for weight gain. Ever since has been searching for a home to call his very own. After his horrific past one would expect this dog to be shy and backward, but he is just the opposite. Sam is not afraid. At ARF events, Sam would rush to meet people just to introduce his vibrant healed self and let them know he was ready to go home with them.
This weekend this great dog lucked out! On Sunday, July 29th he became a member of the Novasad family in Wheaton. He is healthy, happy and ready to love with little to no long-term damage to his body.
He will make the transition to his new home easily since he has been ARF’s ambassador for all their dogs. Even after all of the hardship that he suffered, he has only been a representative of love and new beginnings. On his first day with his foster family, he managed to worm his way into a six inch space between his foster father and a big chocolate Lab; partially sitting on top of the Lab he had just been introduced to. Sam simply assumed he would be loved by all and his confidence paid off.
Sam became a regular on the couch and even began sneaking into his foster parents’ bed. Imagine their surprise when they would wake to find that they were spooning a sweet Boxer who loves nothing more than to give lots of kisses and be in constant contact with people.
The healthier this Boxer became, the more active he became. He loved to run with joyous abandon in his foster family’s yard with his foster brothers and sisters. Being able to witness the miraculous recovery of this lovely dog filled the hearts of all ARF members who knew his story with tremendous joy.
Sam is well aware of his basic commands. He is neutered, microchipped, has all vaccines up-to-date, is crate trained and house broken. He will simply have to get accustomed to the layout of his new home. The love will come easily.
After a long weekend, this beautiful boy will just want engage in one of his favorite pastimes with his new family – naptime! According to all the stories from Frank and Kim about Sam loving a good snuggle, his new family should be completely fulfilled with his offer of unconditional love. Perhaps now when he snuggles in he will know he is finally home!
