Or did he?
The only reason Satan would cause your household appliances, computer and automobiles to break or malfunction would be: to tempt you to doubt God, sin against Him, or to thwart your work in the Lord (Job 1:8, 12, 2:4-7; Matt 4:1-11; 1 Thess 2:18; 2 Thess 3:1-3). If these things wouldn’t tempt or hinder you, then be assured, it’s not the work of Satan.
Though many Christians believe Satan is the reason for any or all calamities that come upon our lives (including illnesses, broken relationships, etc.), it’s more likely these trials are either facets of living in a decaying and fallen world, or the loving discipline of God our Father.
“I [Jesus] have said these things to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world…It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons…For they [earthly fathers] disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but He [God] disciplines us for our good, that we may share His holiness. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.”
~John 16:33; Heb 12:7, 10-11
As children of the Almighty, we must be careful not to be led astray by various teachings that aren’t aligned with God’s word. If you think Satan is wreaking havoc in your life, before sharing this news with others, be sure to check with the LORD to see if He’s the one who’s bringing or allowing these trials to come upon you and those you love.
In Scripture, there are only a limited number of things in which we see God allowing (the key word here is “allowing”) the devil to have any effect on the lives of those who fear, love and trust Him (Luke 8:12; Acts 10:38).
The devil is actively at work in this world to deceive unbelievers and believers alike: to doubt God, to create dissension, to encourage selfishness and to tempt all to sin against God through contemptuous acts bred from the desires of the flesh, desires of the eyes and the pride of life (1 John 2:16).
Satan isn’t interested in annoying you or making you feel overwhelmed by life. Why? Because these are the very things that only cause you to run towards God, not away from Him.
As much as we’d like to think we’re important to the devil, we’re not. The only reason why the devil is interested in us, is because he’s interested in God; and hates Him. All Satan wants to do is defile and destroy all that God loves. And if breaking your washing machine tempts you to defile your relationship with Jesus, then yes, I guess Satan did break it; but only with God’s permission, because He alone is sovereign.
