This week’s “Scary Picture of the Week” is titled “Zombie Encounter.” This action sequence was inspired by the Resident Evil movie franchise. I created this image using a computer program known as Poser.
Owned by the video game company Capcom, Resident Evil began as a survival horror game series for the PlayStation system. Created by Shinji Mikami, this horror game has since morphed into more of an action game. The Resident Evil franchise has also expanded to include, comic books, novels, collectibles, and of course a series of live-action and computer-generated feature films.
In 2002, this franchise made its film debut with Resident Evil, directed Paul W. S. Anderson (Mortal Kombat, Event Horizon, Death Race, and The Three Musketeers). Four other live-action films have followed, the latest being Resident Evil: Retribution (2012). A pair of CGI movies has also been produced, as well as a standalone short film.
One of the key characters (she is unique to the films but is not in the video game) is Alice. Played by actress Milla Jovovich, Alice battles the Umbrella Corporation, who in the early films has created what is called a T-virus, which is responsible for a zombie apocalypse. Subsequent films have expanded on this storyline, so much so that the zombies now play more of a background role in these later movies.
Supposedly, director Anderson plans to wrap up the live-action franchise with one more movie, which will also star Milla Jovovich as Alice (Jovovich is Anderson’s wife). Rumors have hinted that the series may continue beyond six films, but that the focus will no longer be on the character of Alice.
