The season for new theme park ride and attraction announcements is upon us. Dollywood and Cedar Point have already tempted us with cool and innovative coasters and thrill rides and we’re eagerly awaiting what the rest of the “worlds” have to offer.
Coaster enthusiasts and thrill seekers around the world will be anticipating a first-of-its-kind roller coaster debuting at Silver Dollar City in spring of 2013. The 1880s western-style theme park in Branson, Missouri will open Outlaw Run, the world’s only wooden roller coaster to go upside down.
Outlaw Run puts passengers aboard a wild west stagecoach ride where a wild chase ensues. This new $10 million ride will send guests careening through the Ozark Mountains on a ground-breaking wooden coaster that features several firsts, including:
- The world’s steepest drop on a wooden coaster – more than 16 stories with a 162-foot drop at a nearly vertical 81-degrees
- The world’s only wooden coaster to twist upside down – a record-breaking three inversions includes a 720-degree, double barrel roll
- The second fastest wooden coaster in the world – top speed of 68 mph
- The world’s fastest wooden coaster on steel wheels
“Our Silver Dollar City fans told us they wanted a new thrill attraction, and we were determined to create a world-class experience even they couldn’t imagine,” said Brad Thomas, senior vice-president of Silver Dollar City Attractions. “We pushed to take the classic wood coaster to a place it’s never been before by applying modern technology and techniques to traditional wood coaster building methods. The result is a wood coaster with never-done-before thrill elements.”
Silver Dollar City designs attractions with compelling storylines based on real history. The park teamed up with Idaho-based Rocky Mountain Construction on the innovative engineering, design and construction of the new ride.
Outlaw Run takes advantage of the park’s natural mountain terrain, where a more than 10-story lift leads to a 162-foot drop into a valley. Custom-designed stagecoach-inspired trains take riders on a journey of unexpected drops, thrilling twists and weightlessness.
“All generations will enjoy this bold and daring ride where the ‘good guys always win,’” said Thomas.
Silver Dollar City is the number one attraction in Branson, Missouri, with 30 rides, shows, attractions, award-winning festivals and an authentic crafts colony. The park is open mid-March through December. Please visit SilverDollarCity/2013.com for more information and updates on the construction of Outlaw Run.
