They call it the oldest profession known to man, prostitution, a system of bartering or paying for goods for services rendered. Although the word ‘prostitution’ can be used to describe the act of selling sex, it can also mean ‘using a skill or ability in a way that is considered very shameful. It seems to include a moral judgment, by implying that individuals who sell sex are involved in a practice that is corrupt and so are themselves unworthy. A far more neutral and respectful alternative is the term ‘sex work’.
This issue may not matter so much in the context of everyday conversations or casual debates, but in serious discussions on the topic it is important that words are chosen carefully. Since this article seeks to discuss the issue of HIV and sex work in an open and non-judgmental way, we refer to sex workers rather than prostitutes.
The term ‘sex worker’ refers to a wide array of people who sell sex, and who work in a variety of environments. They include women, men and transgender people and people who may work either full time or part time, in brothels, or bars, on the street or from home for example.
When you think of prostitutes I am reminded by the old class B movies, a slick talking Afro-American man or a mean Italian walking the streets or driving a long deuce & a quarter, pulling up to the curve and checking his girls for his money or a man talking to a young woman and enticing her to do what’s right for the betterment of them both.
And what happens when the women came up short? There was no conning a pimp he had the mathematical calculations for what a prostitute should turn in a day, she either had to go work the night away until she came up with her pimps money or got severally beaten by her pimp; What a life, what would make a person become a prostitute there are so many reason why.
Prostitution is glamorized in some countries like the USA, and they have their favorites likeable personalities like Marilyn Monroe, an ex bi- sexual prostitute that slept with two famous brothers letters ending in JFK & RFK, there are countless women that have left their families to make it big or entered the profession just make enough to pay their bills and raise their children by themselves but we all know it takes two to make a child. While society shuns prostitution as it’s an inner turmoil sin one that will get you stoned to death in some countries and in some countries it’ll make you famous it all depends on what part of the world you live in.
But today we have social media networks , the king of social media Facebook in which it seems like the whole planet is on ,is a hot bed for prostitution, there’s an subscribe button, people with their half naked photo’s and their status update “ Works at making Money” or whatever moniker they decide to use. Then there’s MocoSpace, where you can make a page, input your phone and your phone number and people can call you without getting your number. WOW, there are so many social media sites that promote prostitution that it’s a shame, social media has put pimps out of work as everyone is all for themselves.
Let’s go back to the beginning and look at some famous prostitutes from the bible.
1. Gomer was the prostitute Hosea married when God told him to pick a whore for a wife. But prostitution is referenced to the way Israel treated God, God would bless them with gifts and in return the would disrespect God and abandon his commands and wishes.
2. Israel as said by Jeremiah. [Jeremiah 3:3]
3. Jephthah’s mother [Judges 11:1]
4. Judah is a hooker [Ezekiel 16 and 23]
5. Male prostitutes in the temple. [1 Kings 14:24]
6. Moabite women or the Israelite men? The bible says the men go whoring but the women are or course blamed. [Numbers 25]
7. Oholah and her sister Oholibah [Ezekiel 23]
8. Rahab, [Joshua 2]
9. Tamar, [Genesis 38]
10. Two mothers go to Solomon claiming that they are the mother of the newborn baby. Turns out both moms are prostitutes. [1 Kings 3]
11. When Ahab was killed a bunch of women prostitutes bathed in his blood. [1 Kings 22]
As we all know women where the first system of bartering they were either traded for a debt or sold off to pay for a man disrespect towards a King or for failing to pay their taxes.
What makes a person want to prostitute when there is so many diseases, psychopaths (male & female) but mainly their reputation is on the line and is forever stained and they will where the scarlet letter for the remainder of their lives?
The late Dr.Harold Greenwald (b) 1911. (d) 1999 who to date is still the largest and foremost expert on prostitution stated in 1999 “You make a decision to upset yourself; you don’t get upset because of something that happened in your childhood” his (1958) best selling book entitled “The Call Girl” gives a direct look at the psychological aspect of what makes a person want to prostitute.
Bader (2008) stated that “. Having studied the dynamics of sexual arousal for almost 15 years, and having treated dozens of men who find prostitutes irresistible, I have found that for the overwhelming majority of them, the appeal lies in the fact that, after payment is made, the woman is experienced as completely devoted to the man — to his pleasure, his satisfaction, his care, his happiness. The man doesn’t have to please a prostitute, doesn’t have to make her happy, and doesn’t have to worry about her emotional needs or demands. He can give or take without the burden of reciprocity. He can be entirely selfish. He can be especially aggressive or especially passive, and not only is the woman not upset, she acts aroused.
He is not responsible for her in any way. She is entirely focused on him. He is the center of the world. Now, of course, these interactions are scripted. The prostitute is acting. But it doesn’t matter. For men who like to go to go to prostitutes, the illusion of authenticity is enough. If a man is compelled to use a prostitute because it makes him feel free of guilt, responsibility, and worry, then those feelings must be a special burden to him. Such men feel psychically weighed down by the belief that they’re supposed to take care of women, that they have an obligation to make women happy, to please them. Such beliefs are often exaggerated and based on a belief and perception that women are high-maintenance, helpless, or disposed to be unhappy and dissatisfied.
These beliefs are formed in childhood and are reinforced by our culture. They are often false, but they can inhibit such men in their sexual relationships. In real relationships, they feel that there is always a hidden quid pro quo that they can’t get much unless they give a lot that they have to pay a high price for getting what they need. Of course, intimate relationships then suffer. For these men, a prostitute is sought as a relationship in which the man can “let go” and freely express his most selfish desires without feeling guilty and worried about the effect of these desires on his partner.”
According to Avert.Org there isn’t any data collected on the spread of diseases from prostitutes nor could I find any on the CDC page as well.
Whatever your fetish is be careful practice safe sex and remember getting paid and paying for services has been established since the beginning of time, until we meet again.
