Vacation Bible School kicked off with a record first day attendance. Over 100 people gathered at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Burns Flat, Oklahoma for the SonRise National Park VBS. The 107 people gathering on this Monday evening consisted of 38 national park staff and 69 VBS campers. The evening format has worked very well for the past 3 years and was continued again this year.
Registration began at 5:30 pm and kids were up and singing by 6:00 this evening. The format is a general session for praising God, prayer, singing, and a lesson delivered by a staff skit. This is followed by three different activities. The activities are story time, games, and crafts. All meet back together again for snacks and then more singing and praising God before being dismissed.
Today’s Bible verse is Psalm 46:1. God is our refuge and our strength, an ever present help in trouble.
This year the staff is especially attuned to the heat and so day one games were moved indoors. The staff also is focused on accountability; thus, no child will be released without a parent or authorized adult claiming their child from the sanctuary.
VBS has five traditional days followed by a Saturday evening pool party in which all VBS campers and their families are invited to swim as guests of the church. The VBS finale will be Sunday morning at the traditional service when campers will sing songs that they learned during the week.
For those that missed day 1 of this year’s SonRise National Park VBS, they need only bring their children a little early on Tuesday to join the fun for the rest of the week.
Concurrently with the VBS at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Burns Flat, the First Baptist Church of nearby Dill City is also hosting an evening VBS. No child in the Burns Flat and Dill City area should be home alone this week.
