Part of the beauty of Southwest style is that it draws heavily from the natural elements of the desert, of the red rocks of the Southwest and even the blue of the clear southwestern skies. So I was happy to run across the work of David Bennett, who not only gains inspiration from the plants of the desert, he uses them in creating everything from furniture to sconces. His business is named, simply, Desert Twigs.
His work fits well into any style of Southwest decor as a main focus or as an accent piece. I prefer his work as an accent. Perhaps a framed mirror, a sconce or a shelf would work well against a whitewashed adobe wall.
David uses the Saguaro ribs (or skeleton as I call them) which are found in the Arizona desert after the demise of these giant plants. He describes his affection for the “almighty Saguaro Cactus, easily the most defining native plant of the Southwestern Sonoran Desert. Desert Twigs specializes in one-of-a-kind designs that are made primarily from the Saguaro Cactus inter Skeleton, often referred to as the “Saguaro Rib”. Perfectly imperfect in its unaltered form, twisted, bent & naturally aged.”
He gathers the ribs with permission and creates original works of art for the home. With a background in Architecture, construction and cabinet making, David has the skills to construct a variety of pieces, large and small. His work is all done by hand and, as with any organic material, there are variations in the finished product. David also will do custom orders.
His photos of his work are excellent and will give you some inspiration for decorating your home.
My favorite piece from his offerings is a shelf made of Saguaro cactus ribs and rough-sawn cedar. I like the variation in colors and textures and, of course, the utility of the wall shelf which would be ideal for holding something like a small pueblo pot collection.
I was intrigued by his use of light which plays beautifully through the ribs of the Saguaro that he selects for pieces. He sells his work primarily on Etsy.com . He is located in Tucson, Arizona in the heart of the Sonoran desert. They advertise that they can deliver locally to the Tucson/Phoenix areas.

Writers note: I have not had the opportunity to do a product review personally and encountered David’s work via a Craigslist advertisement. I have every reason to believe his work is as excellent as pictured. His Etsy feedback score is 100%.
