Let’s face it, summer presents us moms with many challenges when it comes to healthy beverage choices for our children. It seems on every corner there are shaved ice stands, chilled gatorade, and sodas of every flavor. With the heat comes thirsty little ones , and a concern for keeping them hydrated properly. Let’s talk about what the proper Remedy of choice for hydration should be. We can blame advertising for instilling in our minds that Gatorade and numerous other drinks are the best choices for replacing electrolytes and quenching our thirst. These drinks may add electrolytes, however, they also Are made up of chemically processed and refined sugar, artificial favors and colors that are harmful to the body. One such ingredient in many of these drinks is brominated vegetable oil which is toxic and known to cause many health issues.
Why not put your mind at ease and offer your children real food sources that replace the few key minerals that need replenishing such as sodium, chloride, potassium, and magnesium. These minerals can be found in simple to make smoothies. Here are two of my favorite electrolyte replenishes that offer top notch nutrients to the body. Try eight ounces of coconut water and stir in one tablespoon of chia seeds. Chia seeds by the way are sold in convenient to go packs which you can easily slip in your purse or diaper bag. My second favorite is 4 stalks of celery, one apple, and a lemon juiced together. The choice is simple, if you care about your children’s health choose real food choices and you can’t go wrong!
