What if you had the cure for cancer but, did nothing with it; would you be responsible for the deaths that resulted? Keitiaunna Howard, a successful single mom, listened to the analogy from a presenter at the Seed Foundation and decided that she did not want to find out. She was motivated to transfer her business ideas from her notepad into real life application. Entrepreneurship was in her lineage. Her Grandparents were both successful business owners. She felt she owed it to them to at least try her hand at business ownership. With a strong support system and faith in God, Keitiaunna says, founding Successful Single Moms, LLC (SSM) was almost effortless. Of course, it was not without hard work and sleepless nights, but that is just a small price to pay for doing what you love.
Ms. Howard’s passion grew from personal experiences. She is the mother of two children a preteen and a toddler. While balancing a full-time job with being a full-time mom, she says, she often sought support from mothers that have been where she is and could offer her advice. Keitiaunna discovered that there was a need for a platform that could help give “single moms the tools they need to do it all”. From potty training tips to car repair advice, Successful Single Moms is a non-profit organization in Columbus, OH for mothers of all backgrounds. The Executive Director explains, whether you are a single mother, you are from a single parent home, or your husband works long hours SSM is an excellent resource for you.
During our interview, Keitiaunna shared the moment when she knew she had created something special. She explained that she had financed two SSM events through personal accounts, but it was becoming increasingly difficult to continue. She graciously accepted the support of a family member who wrote a sponsor letter to seek funding. After receiving that letter, a local organization contributed the money that she needed to hold the Mother-Daughter Day program. She was honored that a reputable business believed in her dream as much as she did herself.
Keitiaunna shared how she measures success.
“It has nothing to do with how much you have but, what you do with what you have; the gifts that you have been given from God”.
By anyone’s standards, Successful Single Moms is a great sccomplishment. SSM will celebrate its first anniversary in January of 2013. Her vision for SSM is to eventually bring it to other areas as it appears to be a nationwide need. The SSM Facebook page has mothers from as far away as Arizona visiting; and its popularity is growing daily. Social networking is an excellent way for non-profit organizations to spread their message. Read more on how non-profits can utilize social media here.
