News About Nebbiolo: Wines Made from the Great Grape!
The word nebbiolo, an indigenous Italian grape variety, is thought to originate from the Italian word for fog, “nebbia”, which typically engulfs the Langhe region in Piedmont during harvest each year. But the grape does well in other places that don’t have Latin mist, and we’ll also explore some of those expressions of the grape this week. As Florence might say, the fog days are over, the fog days are over!

“We’ve been doing these yearly tastings with O’Reilly’s wine soon after I first opened the shop in Sellwood 13 (gulp) years ago. The first vintage of David’s wines I carried was the ’99 Sineann when he was one half of that remarkable partnership. Since then, with the early Sineann wines and now the Owen Roe label, which I feel has far surpassed anything under the Sineann label, he again and again shows his wine making chops to be among the most finely honed in the United States.
“I truly can say, with I think all objectivity, that Owen Roe is one of the greatest American wine producers. And thank the man above he makes his wine here and not in Cali or we’d all be paying about three times as much for these bottles of deliciousness… So do make plans, because the wise wine drinker knows this is the Friday not to miss. Here’s why…..”
2011 OWEN ROE Riesling “DuBrul Vineyard” $19.95…would it be going to far to say this is a Mosel lookalike? Not really. Great riesling!
2010 CORVIDAE WINE CO. “Rook” Cab-Merlot-Syrah $13.95
2009 CORVIDAE WINE CO. “Lenore” Syrah $15.95…with these two fabulous values see what happens when D. O’R. makes wines for the bourgeosie. Happy, happy things indeed!
2009 OWEN ROE Pinot Noir “Sharecropper’s” $19.95….garret has generously offered to dip into the O.R. Library and pull this sold out bottling so we an taste (and buy?) to see how it’s coming along? Six cases only are available.
2011 OWEN ROE “Sinister Hand” Grenache-Syrah-Mouvèdre-Cinsault $23.95….if you need to define “bursting with fruit”, here ya go.
And then of course the ante gets upped with our bonus pours….
Bonus #1- 2011 OWEN ROE “Dundee Hills-Durant Vineyard” Pinot Noir $39.95…wait’ll your olfactory senses get a snootful of this beauty. Yowza!
Bonus #2-2011 OWEN ROE “Ex Umbris” Syrah $26.95…yes, it is a bit higher priced this year, but as always it smokes most of its even higher priced competition.
Bonus-Bonus- 2010 OWEN ROE “Yakima Valley Red” Merlot-Cab Franc-Cab Sauv $41.95…simply stunning and just now squeaking into prime drinking territory. Lucky you!
