Demi Lovato (The X Factor) and Kevin McHale (Glee) hosted the 2012 Teen Choice Awards on July 22 on FOX. It’s the only awards show where teens pick the winners by voting online in categories ranging from film and TV to music. Award winners take home a full-size colorful Teen Choice Award Surfboard instead of the standard trophy.
The night began slow due to some uneven banter between both hosts but Lovato kept things interesting with her bubbly personality and three wardrobe changes that highlighted her signature rock n’ roll style. She wore an edgy yellow & black mini with a feathered bottom, a softer black and white keyhole slit dress and a black dress with waistline crisscross cutouts covered by spike-studded biker jacket. Her hair for the final outfit was loose with the tips died blue for added effect.
Not to be outdone, Taylor Swift was fashion forward in a soft white flowing dress with a nearly nude back. She picked up 4 awards including Choice Female Artist bringing her all-time Teen Choice Award tally to 20, the most Teen Choice Awards ever won by a female artist.
The Twilight cast were also big winners picking up the Ultimate Choice award for the Twilight Saga. Onscreen and real-life couple, Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattison, gave their surfboards to overjoyed audience members while Taylor Lautner hung on to his.
The night also some brotherly love going on with both Liam and Chris Hemsworth picking up individual awards. The younger Hemsworth won Choice Male Scene Stealer for his work in The Hunger Games while Chris Hemsworth won Choice Male Summer Movie Star for The Avengers & Snow White and the Huntsman.
The best performance of the night went to Justin Bieber’s entertaining mashup of his hit “Boyfriend” and new song, “As Long As You Love Me”. He featured a Matrix-themed background scrolling his name across the video screen and futuristic dancers performing a catchy yet mature dance solidifying that fact that he’s all grown up even if he still looks like a teenager. He picked up 4 awards including Choice Male Artist.
It wasn’t a bad night for Bieber’s girlfriend, Selena Gomez, either. She turned 20 and her band won Selena Gomez and the Scene won Choice Music Group. Presenters Nina Dobrev (The Vampire Diaries) and Kevin Hart (Think Like a Man) presented her with a cart full of cupcakes adorned with sparklers.
The rest of the night was pretty standard fare with the exception of an age-inappropriate moment when Jordin Sparks (Sparkle) took to the stage with Magic Mike star, Adam Rodriguez to present an award. During their on-camera bantering Sparks feigned being flustered and Rodriguez handed her male thong to wipe away her sweat. Not the best message to send to room full of teenage girls who aren’t eligible to see Magic Mike, a film about male strippers, without a parental guardian due to its R rating.
Carly Rae Jepsen finished off the night with a light-hearted and fun rendition of “Call Me Maybe” as video tributes of the song played in the background. The night ended with the whole audience on their feet, singing along to the song of the summer.
